- Oppose: The artist seems to be WP:PRIMARYUSAGE. I think Paul Simon only used the pseudonym for one song. Sam (talk) 13:44, 4 October 2008 (UTC)
- Oppose: The painter is unquestionably the primary usage (and I'm the one who added Paul Simon to the page). Sarcasticidealist (talk) 17:25, 4 October 2008 (UTC)
- Oppose: In case it was not clear below, I have decided to agree with you guys. If I could withdraw my request I would. I just did it because I felt I was right, and I thought I understood WP policy on DAB --K3vin (talk) 21:54, 4 October 2008 (UTC)
Discussion
[edit]- Any additional comments:
I just did it because it makes sense to me. I am unsure how primary a usage needs to be. But if you take the total number of Paul Simon fans that may know of the one song, and compare that to the number of people that know who the artist is, I wonder which would be larger. I would be curious to know how many people clicked through to the disamb page from the artist page to see who the other paul kanes were. I do not think I have a vote in this race, since it is implied in my request. This is about search, not output. The artists output does not need to be the critera of primary use. But I am but an eager new guy when it comes to this high end wiki stuff. --K3vin (talk) 19:07, 4 October 2008 (UTC)
- The only song that Simon released under that pseudonym, to the best of my knowledge, is Carlos Domingues. As far as I know, it's never been released on CD (or indeed in any other form since 1963). What Simon was writing at that time (I've never heard Domingues, but I've heard a lot of other stuff from that era) was throwaway bubblegum pop stuff that bears no resemblance to the stuff that made him famous. I think there is very little danger of very many Paul Simon fans knowing that he even used the name Paul Kane (and those who do would certainly know that it was a barely-used pseudonym, and would be unlikely to search Wikipedia for him under that name). To use an unscientific method, I just made "paul+kane"+-wikipedia&btnG=Google+Search&meta= this Google search. Eight of the top ten hits are about the artist. A ninth is for Paul Kane High School, named after the artist. A tenth is for a private individual who has set up a web page. While Google searches are hardly conclusive, I think if anything we'd expect a nineteenth century artist to be underrepresented relative to a twentieth century pop star, a contemporary sci-fi writer, and a recently-retired professional athlete. - We are still talking about Paul Simon. It is not like the discussion is having the paul kane name point directly to simon. we are trying to count the number of users that have to click twice to find the article they want in search mode. Thats all. an extra click. If I had my way, there would be no prmary usage rle, once a disam page reached a certain number like 3 --K3vin (talk) 20:26, 4 October 2008 (UTC)
- Ps hoping for more information, I did a cursive "what links here" search from Paul Kane, and found more links than I ever thought possible. Using my single click or double click paradigm, it would inconvenience a lot of wiki article editors if the proposed change went through. --K3vin (talk) 20:47, 4 October 2008 (UTC)
- Hi K3vin. There is a statistics tool at [1], which might help satisfy your curiosity. It says that, in August, 87 people visited the disambiguation page, while 1486 visited the artist. Sam (talk) 22:29, 4 October 2008 (UTC)
- That does. Once I saw how well linked whats his name was, I realized my Paul Simon Pedanticism was getting the best of me. Pen names drive me crazy anyway. As Bas as drag names. --K3vin (talk) 23:00, 4 October 2008 (UTC)
