Blocked for days?!

I have lived in Santa Cruz County since 1985 and I cannot remember Hwy 17 ever being closed for days. Maybe over night once or twice? Snowfall is unusual and generally melts quickly. This discussion leaves the impression that Patchen Pass is regularly blocked by large amounts of snow. I think this is misleading and there's no reference for this view.
