Are "partition tables" only found in MBRs?

I'm quoting Letdorf from his talk page. (I must note that Letdorf is being very considerate and patient with my strict adherence to "Wikipedia policy" ;-) "this article is about the concept of disk partitioning in general, and not specifically about MBR partition tables on PCs. I'm not sure what systems constitute "partition tables". Are any of the following commonly (or properly) called "partition tables": GUID Partition Table, Apple partition map, BSD disklabel? The reason I ask is only to know if the partition table backup sections are at least on topic in this article. Lumenos (talk) 01:20, 30 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, in a general sense a "partition table" could be any data structure used to store information about how a storage medium is partitioned, and hence could be used to refer to disklabels, GPTs etc. If you want this article to be specifically about PC BIOS MBR/EBR partition tables, I would suggest making the title more specific, and establishing the context of the article specifically in the lead paragraph. I don't have a source to hand that provides a general definition of "partition table", but "GPT" stands for "GUID Partition Table", so that is pretty self-evident, the Solaris documentation on disklabels [1] uses the term "partition table", and the pdisk utility for Apple Partition Maps is described as an Apple partition table editor in its man page [2], so I think the generic use of the term is fairly well established.
