Date of composition

[edit]

As it stands, the brief paragraph is self contradictory regarding the date of composition. One place it says it was probably written 1718, and a short while later, it says that it had to have been written after 1723. I suspect that this is a matter of poor writing regarding a question of dating which hasn't been resolved. Probably should be revised along the lines of "some think it was written 1718 while others think 1723", with of course suitable references as to who thinks what. Time to stand up and be counted, I guess. I was the editor who did this, back in April 2013 with this edit. I followed it up with the "Further reading" list, which is roughly four times the length of everything else in the article combined. That 1718 dating, as noted in hidden editorial text, is from a website that confesses itself not to be 100% reliable. It is about time somebody noticed this problem, congratulations for being the first to do so. It is my fault that this has lain dormant for so long—it was my original intention to come back and fix it. I shall do so now.—Jerome Kohl (talk) 22:48, 13 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I kinda figured there might be conflicting opinions about when this work dates from, which I can well understand. BTW, I corrected a typo for you. Wschart (talk) — Preceding undated comment added 00:39, 14 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
It isn't even so much conflicting opinion as just plain very little evidence. I have no idea at all where that website got that date (possibly out of a fortune cookie). I remember reading somewhere (probably in the critical report of the NBA, and certainly many years ago) that the handwriting of the manuscript belongs to two copyists who also made fair copies of cantatas for Bach at some point, but just when, I cannot now recall. I shall have to make a trip to the library and have a look again. Thanks for correcting my typo, though I could complain that it was meant to read "not certain" :-D Jerome Kohl (talk) 01:07, 14 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Well, nobody is going to accuse me of acting in haste. It is now nine months since I promised to look up the critical report in the NBA, which I have now done. The relevant information has now been added to the article. This of course dates only the manuscript, which means the Partita cannot have been composed any later than about 1724 but, given the absence of any other evidence, might have been written at any time before that year.—Jerome Kohl (talk) 00:01, 10 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
