Re: list of Owen Owen branches I notice that there is no mention of Taunton on the list. Taunton once had a branch of Owen Owen, it closed down at 5:30pm on Saturday 15 July 1978. WHSmith moved into the vacated store, and opened autumn 1980. —Preceding unsigned comment added by PontyCS1994 (talkcontribs) 11:15, 1 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

1975 purchases and sale by Norman family

[edit]

I have been looking but cannot find any information about any of the purchases made in 1975. Is it just coincidental that they were all purchased that year or did they buy another chain? Also cannot find anything about sale of the business by the Norman family. It happened sometime in the 80s, but all I can find is Kingfishers property arm Chartwell Land bought some freeholds but nothing to say if they ran the business, or it was just a deal to raise money (as per Philip Greens purchase as claimed in John Timpson's books about the High Street) Davidstewartharvey (talk) 18:37, 3 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

    • Further to my comments above I believe the 1975 date may have been when the store was rebranded. This is because Richard Maddox in Shrewsbury, according to the Shropshire History site, was bought by Owen Owen in 1966. Davidstewartharvey (talk) 07:16, 4 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Weston-super-Mare: Owen Owen closed 1993, but TJ Hughes came back late 90s?

[edit]

As the title really, Owen Owen closed in 1993, but there was a TJ Hughes in the old Co-op department store along the road, which I think appeared late 90s. It must have closed around 2007 now looking back. The building is riddled with asbestos and so to this day sits empty and abandoned with signs of TJ Hughes ownership (and classic Co=op concrete mural) to this day (June 2022) 92.17.141.50 (talk) 21:28, 30 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
