Wartime embroidery
[edit]To dramatize his wartime record, Hellmuth manipulated the facts somewhat, it seems. Quite common for a certain kind of Nazi officials. One can find only one wound by enemy action during his military service with bavarian army. A roster entry, written in 1918, reads as follows:
- 27.1.15 dem Feldlazarett 12 Comines wegen Typhus überwiesen [hospitalized, Typhus]
- 29.2.16 am linken Knie durch Granatsplitter leicht verwundet (ambulante Behandlung) [slightly wounded by shell splinter on left knee, ambulatory treatment]
- 30.3.16 ins Kriegslazarett 3, XIV. Armeekorps (Lungenspitzenkattarh) [hospitalized, pulmonary apicitis]
End of July, 1918, he was transferred to Replacement battalion, Landwehr Infantry Regiment No. 8, and
- 14.9.18 zur Ablegung seines Abiturientenexamens in Freiburg i. Br. nach Marktbreit ohne Versorgung entlassen [discharged to take his A level, without compensation for war related disablement]
(no single mention of any gassing, let alone severe, neither in 1918, nor any other time. Four times wounded might be somewhat misleading, because one should think that he was repeatedly harmed by enemy action)
(see: Kriegsstammrolle (wartime military roster) No. 9132, Koeniglich Bayerisches Landwehr Infanterie Regiment 8, Ersatz-Bataillon, 2. Kompagnie, picture 509, at ancestry.com; revised May 2, 2019)
(as a further example how trustful nazi self-declarations about their WW-I service are. True, he got Silbernes Verwundetenabzeichen, anyhow.) --129.187.244.19 (talk) 11:10, 3 May 2019 (UTC)
