What is auto-sclerosis?
[edit]Otosclerosis, where "oto" means ear. "Auto" means self. Why self-sclerosis? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Varnav (talk • contribs) 08:52, 22 January 2008 (UTC)
A few questions
[edit]This article states that the condition can cause high frequency sensorineural (SN) hearing loss. As I understand it, it causes an SN loss centred on 2kHz (Carhart's notch), but this is an artefact caused by loss of resonance in the middle ear, due to stapedial fixation, which disappears on (successful) surgery.
Also I remember an ENT surgeon telling me it is much more prevalent in Asian women than any other demographic.
Can anyone clear this up?Si1965 (talk) 22:00, 27 June 2008 (UTC)
Otosclerosis can affect the cochlea as well as the middle ear. When it does, it results in sensorineural hearing loss. Whether cochlear involvement is an eventual progression of the disease, only occurs for some cases (otosclerosis is genetically heterogeneous), or can occur without middle ear involvement is still under investigation. The above poster is correct that Carhart's notch is not a true sensorineural loss; it only shows up in some otosclerotic patients. ~anon — Preceding unsigned comment added by 135.23.172.210 (talk) 00:51, 22 March 2015 (UTC)
More findings on causes
[edit]Causes of the desease seem to be linked to lack of Osteoprotegrin production.
Anyone can write about this?
