Problem with this article

[edit]

It doesn't actually explain what an ostomy pouching system is used for. It makes very vague references that would be understood by those who already know its purpose, for for one who does not, they're not going to learn much.

Too technical

[edit]

Could someone make an article in simple wikipedia?  — 6etonyourfeet\t\c 00:51, 21 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

"incorrectly called" a Colostomy Bag? Not sure about that

[edit]

That term is used pretty much universally in the UK, including by:

"Ostomy pouching system" seems to be overwhelmingly an American term - a Google for it on UK sites brings up precisely one hit, whereas "colostomy bag" brings up fourteen thousand! 86.136.251.164 15:29, 1 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know about the UK, but Manufactuers in the US call their products pouches.

[1] [2]

Given that major manufactuers use the term "pouch" (in the US at least), then the word "bag" should be considered slang. If UK manufactuers indeed call their products "bags" then some statement to address that should be added to the article. DCwom 12:18, 2 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Is it not a case that two pieces of plastic welded together form a bag or a pouch. Since the american terminology now working its way in the english language then people will call it what they will, meaning that bag or pouch is neither correct nor incorrect. I call it bag one minute and pouch the next.

can anyone let me know if i can put a link to bagbag ostomy pouch covers here. This is to verify the argument --Stevecarmichael 04:50, 19 November 2009 (UTC).

I respectfully submit that the general term "ostomy bag" or "ostomy pouch" is more correct than "colostomy bag" or "colostomy pouch," unless one is specifically addressing issues pertaining to individuals with colostomies. While this may qualify as original research, I would like to say that I wear such a pouch as a result of an *ileostomy,* not a colostomy. Further, some individuals use pouches as a result of urostomies, a completely different procedure than a colostomy. 204.86.42.50 (talk) 18:15, 14 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I agree that the more generic term of ostomy is correct. The number of colostomies is far greater than ileostomoes and urostomies, therefore the general public is more likely to have heard of them, but since wikis are very good at educating folks I vote for the term ostomy pouch as well. I've added "colostomy bag" with a dictionary reference. Ostomy pouching system may be common in the US. Elsewhere, to both manufacturers, suppliers, medical staff and users, it's a "colostomy bag". --Tóraí (talk) 18:57, 4 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Certainly that's the term used by the general public in the UK. I've noticed recently that medical professionals seem to be switching to the term "stoma bag". In any event, nobody calls them "ostomy pouches". I'd never even heard of that term until I read it here. --Ef80 (talk) 16:37, 13 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Not to be argumentative, but ostomates (and I am one) can be pretty earthy themselves when discussing their pouches/bags and matters pertaining to them. "Shit sack," while certainly a juvenile expression, is actually a pretty accurate and descriptive term for an ostomy pouch/bag, its function and its contents. That said, I don't think there needs to be a wiki entry for that term.  :* 204.86.34.1 (talk) 20:26, 4 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
