Demographics

[edit]

This comment was left on the main article by an anon:

The DEMOGRAPHICS Section, line 1 contains incorrect, confusing, or ambiguous data: "9,112, 2,691 households". I assume what is intended is that the population is '9112' and there are '2691' households.

I'm not sure why that occured (demographic language is auto-added by a bot, but this article was vandalized a bit a few months ago). So I've gone ahead and manually fixed the language. --W.marsh 19:45, 11 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

there are 2 different populations stated for the 2000 census: 9,112 and 9,114. the difference is minor to say the least, but one of them is wrong and it looks bad.Toyokuni3 (talk) 21:19, 22 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:Orono Maine seal.jpg

[edit]

Image:Orono Maine seal.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 05:43, 6 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Pointless accuracy

[edit]

"Orono is located at about 44.8998 degrees latitude, -68.67444 degrees longitude." Since one degree is (roughly) 69 miles on average, an accuracy of 0.00001 degrees, as used in the longitude figure, is around 3.6 feet. If the figures really are that accurate, then there's no need for "about". If they're not, they shouldn't be quoted to such misleading accuracy. 86.132.140.45 (talk) 23:35, 12 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Less facts more feeling?

[edit]

It seems like this article could use a little more love. Percentages and locations are great, but have we actually learned anything about this town? Maybe more contributions on the fact that it is a small college town with lots of activity, a very arts oriented and interesting community?

Wider coverage map?

[edit]

The map showing the location of Orono provides very little context to someone not already familiar with regions of Maine. Perhaps a statewide map as is more common on Wikipedia is more appropriate here and this image can be used elsewhere on the page. 2601:18B:300:1940:5C2D:4C3F:3F3F:9B18 (talk) 22:54, 17 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I second this. The map is useless to someone not familiar with the counties of Maine. 2601:18B:300:5780:B7E:4675:9F60:4CB0 (talk) 00:49, 23 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
