Translating "patria"

I recently edited the article to change the translation of "oro alla patria", replacing "homeland" with "fatherland". It seemed to me an obvious and straightforward correction, even though "homeland" and "fatherland" (and "motherland") are synonyms, because "patria" is related to the Italian and Latin words for "father", and because "fatherland" is customarily used as a fascist regime's term for its nation.

But, looking at the article's short history, I see that all three terms have been used as translations for "patria". And at least once, the word "fatherland" has been replaced by one of the others.

So let's discuss it here. Do you think one of the other words is a more suitable translation? Tell us why! What makes the term you prefer a better one? TypoBoy (talk) 17:01, 30 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

We should be using the most common translation from reliable, secondary sources. There is a selection of academic literature with options but the only English source currently in the article uses "Gold for our country". czar 23:16, 30 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I agree that reliable sources are the answer.

All the suitable sources I could find said "gold for the fatherland" (not "to the fatherland" as I had left it). I made that change and added three citations. (There was a book that translated it "gold for the homeland", but it was a novel and therefore not a suitable source.)

I had in mind to add the citations here in this talk-page discussion first, but the talk page doesn't have the "Templates" pull-down menu. So I edited the article.

The only source the article had until now was an American newspaper article from the time of the campaign. A source like this would describe the fascists with different language from that used by a twenty-first century encyclopedia. TypoBoy (talk) 19:43, 1 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
