The following text was moved from the article page. It should be written in an encyclopedic style before being inserted into the article. olivier 22:51, Apr 26, 2004 (UTC)

Algeria ceased to be an Ottoman vassal in 1710 and, even before, never was more than a vassal state.
The "Ottoman Empire" here is to be replaced by the Beylik of Algiers. Alexander Ganse, WHKMLA (www.zum.de/whkmla).

Is there an Orania in Algeria?

On a site about Algerian music there is this quote: "...the music developed in the city centers of Orania, mainly Oran..." Maybe this refers to the province Oran.

The only wikipedia article on "Orania" is about S Africa. Is there a need for disambiguation?

There's no Orania in Algeria. Maybe they made a mistake.
Orania (French: Oranie) is Oran's metropolitan area. --Escondites talk 12:13, 31 December 2006 (UTC)

West Algeria was called Orania, and Oran was capital of Orania.

This page needs to be re-written, in correct English. The hodge-podge here is a mix of English, French, and computer-generated translation from French to English.

Arabic

Being, like most of our readers, illiterate in Arabic, a transliteration of the Arabic name would be appreciated. I believe the Arabic for Oran is Ammi-Moussa, but I'd be very hesitant to add that to the article without confirmation from someone who can confirm. -- Jmabel | Talk 01:32, 4 January 2006 (UTC)

The Arabic word for Oran is "Wahran" --Escondites talk 12:13, 31 December 2006 (UTC)

Yes The Arabic word for'''Oran''' is '''Wahran'''. And Ammi-Moussa is Uncle Moses.

The comment regarding British and WWII

I think it is an inappropriate comment to talk about whether the British were prepared to go alone against Nazi Germany, in this section. This is about a city, and not political/historical opinion.

This is the text:

"In July 1940, the British Royal Navy shelled French warships in the port after they refused to respond to a British ultimatum designed to ensure they would not fall into German hands. The action sealed the hatred of Vichy France for Britain but convinced the world, especially the United States, of the British will to fight on alone against Nazi Germany and its allies."

Survey

Feel free to state your position on the renaming proposal by beginning a new line in this section with *'''Support''' or *'''Oppose''', then sign your comment with ~~~~. Since polling is not a substitute for discussion, please explain your reasons, taking into account Wikipedia's naming conventions.
  • Comment. The redirect can be changed to point to this page under a primary topic argument without a move taking place. This title preserves clarity, and the redirect would help disambiguate more smoothly. But we don't need to be worrying about setting or changing precedents here. It seems clear that the city in Algeria is the primary topic, in the same way as the examples mentioned above (except for Kochi). Dekimasuよ! 04:19, 13 June 2007 (UTC)
  • Support There are always eponymous place names all over the world, but that doesn't make these place names disambiguatious, for example if you hear Washington you first think about the US state or the US capital, it the OTHER Washingtons who need a disambiguation, not the main one. --escondites 12:17, 13 June 2007 (UTC)

Discussion

Any additional comments:

Machine translation

It looks like this is a machine translation of the french article, like the article about Algiers. I think it should be reverted to this [1] revision, or any similair revision, until we get a "human translation"? --escondites 22:51, 2 November 2007 (UTC)

Population

The opening paragraph says the city has 1 million people (source from a tourist guide), but the infobox says it has 683K people. Hypertall (talk) 16:06, 8 June 2009 (UTC)
