Omega Protein is the largest producer of fish oil in the world! Furthermore, they were involved in the recent lawsuit againts 8 fish oil producers that may have been the biggest exposé of contaminated fish oil products ever in the United States. Do these not warrant a page for Omega Protein? NutrisaurusRex (talk) 01:51, 6 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

They're also a publicly-traded company on the NYSE.NutrisaurusRex (talk) 02:13, 6 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

COI review

[edit]

This article was full of unsourced promotional content. And a big well sourced environmental record section (typical for WP). I pretty much gutted the actual business section. It needs to be rebuilt with good sourcing. I had tagged this for COI but will now remove that tag. Jytdog (talk) 00:38, 30 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Omega Protein challenged by Sierra Club South Mississippi as being an unethical company

[edit]

A Case against Omega Protein’s NYSE-(OME), “Menhaden Reduction” Operations, Moss Point, MS and Reedville, VA

This is an antiquated industry that is wrecking collateral damage throughout our National fishery. They continue to cause a collapse in sportfish and premium fish along the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico.
Our goal is to bring the truth out in the industry as to the corruption, toxic waste, undignified working conditions, wrongful deaths, bi-catch, and the hundreds of species that depend on Menhaden for essential nutrition. We intend to prove the Menhaden reduction industry is the most damaging of fisheries. That MSC the certification body is a marketing scam deceiving consumers and causing toxic products to reach the American Public with a huge liability in the future for Omega Protein.
Omega Protein is the 2nd largest by volume of all the fisheries in the USA.
Omega takes close to 1 billion pounds of menhaden and bi-catch.
Bi catch is 40,000,000 pounds of 80 species. This is more than the state recreational fishery.
Eagles, Osprey, Dolphin, whales over 100 species depend on menhaden for nutrition, and suffer when they are gone.
Omega is killing dolphins as bi-catch.
Omega is polluting the same waters they fish.
Omega is using altered “Science” as a shield to protect their destructive fishing practices.
Omega spends 15 million annually on immigrations fees to employ foreign workers because the conditions are not fit for locals. Also they have abused the “Migrant Farm Workers Act” by using them in “Jones Act” positions.
The GSMFC-Gulf States Marine Fisheries Commission has been infiltrated by Omega Protein and they sit on the board of the fisheries management.
Omega supplies the science to the industry and the GSMFC. So, there is no real science in the industry, including misleading information to the spawning of the fish. So the shark is in the fish bowl.
Omega has hired a private marketing firm, MSC, Marine Stewardship Counsel, to convince the public they are sustainable. It is a marketing scam!!! 30 percent of the fisheries MSC certifies are in collapse. They do it for large sums of money. 15 million dollars is what Omega will spend annually with MSC to buy good will, credibility and sustainability. 15 million dollars will guarantee you a certification. Even in a collapsing fishery.
MSC was founded by Unilever the giant in Europe that controls 20 percent of the wholesale fish market in Europe. MSC uses Omega science for their report. There is no real science in this industry.
Everywhere the menhaden boats have been there is collateral damage throughout the Eco system.
MSC certification process is a scam. It does not even go out on a boat to see the fishery or the bi-catch. They spend a few days here then go back to the UK. It uses Omega “So Called Science”.
MSC’s so called public meeting was not advertised at all. I got an email and said to go to a coffee shop by my house. Myself and 3 concerned citizens met with the 3 SAI reps. I hardly call this transparent or public. SAI does the ground work for MSC, and guarantees a certification regardless of the state of the fishery. I know all of this because I asked the representative. He told me they would certify Omega, regardless.
We plan on helping make radical changes in this industry that will improve not only the wellbeing of coastal residence of Mississippi, but greatly improve the quality of life here on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. This means stopping Omega from fishing in state waters of Mississippi and Louisiana.
We know that the last 60 years of menhaden fishing has resulted in a steady decline and collateral damage in the fisheries of the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico. The Menhaden and everything else that feeds on them are all at historic lows.
We intend to prove to the State Department of Natural Resources that issue the permit that the economic impact is loss of billions in sport fishing recreation dollars.
Let’s take a good look at the fish.
Menhaden have been called the most important fish in the sea by many that have studied them. I totally agree with world famous Oceanographer Sylvia Earle, (Mission Blue) that there will be no recovery in the fisheries without the Menhaden. They are the forage fish that feeds on Zooplankton and Phytoplankton. These plankton are where the Omega 3’s all originate. They filter and fertilize the sound. Oysters flourish where menhaden are abundant. Fisheries rebound when the menhaden boats are gone. The proof is everywhere the Menhaden boats have ceased to operate. The Menhaden are the key to taking the plant Omega 3’s and turning them into fish protein. This is a critical link in the chain of life in the sea. Their duty is to be eaten by most everything in their ecosystem. Osprey, Eagles, Dolphin, Whales, Otters, Tarpon, Redfish, Sea trout, snapper, Grouper, and up to 100 species depend on this very important fish for nutrition. Without is they suffer from malnutrition.
Now an effect of what happens to the Mississippi Sound when the menhaden are not allowed to do their duty. The Algae go toxic and this is what is called a Red Tide. It is cause when the Algae are not eaten and are overpopulated. Now Florida is experiencing purple tides due to the explosion of uncheck Algae. These purple tides kill almost everything in the way. Red tides are selective and only kill part of what is in their path. They can be avoided if the menhaden are left to do their duty. So it is a double edged sword, killing the fisheries in multiple ways.
The menhaden schools were so big when the Europeans first arrive in the America’s. Menhaden were the key to the Pilgrims success on sustaining life in the Americas. In fact, it was Menhaden that was the gift from the Indigenous People to the first settlers.
Omega’s board of directors is on probation from the Justice Department for falsifying SEC filings and reports to investors. They are charged with claiming to be a pollution free quality company, while steadily acquiring more fines and longer probations. The board is currently on probation until 2018.
Meanwhile the EPA has cited and fined Omega again for the same dirty business as usual, dumping toxic water in Louisiana state waters. Bale water is a combination of fish processing water and all of the toxic chemicals they use. Omega dumps this into the very same waters they fish. Is this how they view conservation, poison the water they fish??? They are doing the very same thing in Mississippi and we intend to have them brought to justice. As of now they have not had any resistance here since the wrongful death of Chris Hebert. That has changed.
Omega has 5 wrongful deaths in that many years. One is the death of 23 year old Christopher Hebert. He was a local young man trying to make the world a better place. He identifies all of the things I am writing about and wanted to make the place safe and environmental friendly and met strong opposition according to court records. The entire court proceedings can be read at http://blog.gulflive.com/mississippi-press-news/2013/04/omega_protein_in_moss_point_su.html or just google Hebert VS Omega Protein. You will see the events unravel of the grizzliest of deaths. I deeply feel, along with many others in this community that Omega and a couple of its employees murdered Christopher Hebert for trying to make the world a better place.
There is a ton of pressure from fishing groups, conservationist and the educated public against Omega. Sierra Club has started a campaign against them and the MSC certification process. We hope you will inform your investors as we do not intend to harm anyone that has made a mistake and listened to the propaganda that Omega has presented as science and fact.
I can be reached for comment and have connections to Sierra Club, Sea Shepherd, Green Peace and many other conservation groups, including the world-famous artist Guy Harvey. The WWF World Wildlife fund is also criticizing them for the whole MSC process.
So I strongly advise the public to divest Omega Protein.
