What IS it?

Article currently says it's an 'area', but is it an area that is a part of the olfactory tract itself, or a part of the under-lying olfactory sulcus, or what? The phrase, "...is brought into view by throwing back the olfactory tract." suggests it's part of the sulcus, but #4 on the accompanying picture, perhaps unavoidably, suggests it's part of the tract itself?
