Death estimate

[edit]

In my opinion, the referenced text is not an estimate, but I want to leave this a potential source for commentary by HRW on the larger context.

"scores"[1]

appears in this longer sentence:

The situation in Benue was reminiscent of a sequence of events in the town of Odi, in Bayelsa state in southern Nigeria, in November 1999, when soldiers seeking to avenge the murder of 12 policemen by local armed groups razed the entire town and killed scores of civilians.--Carwil 18:23, 31 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not quite sure I follow. Is it that you think "estimate" should be replaced by "figures" or "numbers" or something, or do you think I've misinterpreted HRW's writing? Picaroon (t) 23:37, 31 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Misinterpreted. The first HRW reference, which I've left in and quoted more extensively, is a summary of HRW's findings on the massacre. It attempts to give what is known and suspected by the organization. The later reference, quoted above, comes in a press release on a related event. It summarizes and does not contradict the earlier finding, but reduces it to one word, which quite frankly could be used for either end of the original estimate. In short, it's not a separate "estimate," just a one word summary of the original. There's nothing in the latter article, which isn't about Odi, to indicate that further clarification went into the rephrasing.

Are you comfortable with the article as revised?--Carwil 14:02, 2 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, makes sense. Thanks. Picaroon (t) 15:33, 2 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
