English style
User:John Maynard Friedman said in a WP:BRD revert that the article has a long history of using en-UK, but the spelling in the article is American spelling. I haven't changed the spelling in my edits; I'm just commenting. --Daviddwd (talk) 00:46, 2 January 2019 (UTC)
- My main point is that tagging the article with {{Use American English|date=January 2019}}{{Use mdy dates|date=January 2019}} should be discussed beforehand, not just slipped in without even an edit note. It looks like claim-staking.
- Wikipedia convention is that we use en-us for obviously American articles, en-uk for obviously British articles and everything else stays in the dialect that it started with. Citations use what they used originally and should not be altered to match editor preferences.
- Not that it matters but the article as it stands is remarkably free of obviously EN-US (or EN-UK for that matter) – the only obvious one is "Licenses" rather than "Licences". ("Localization" with a Z is valid in en-uk too, though rare is still preferred by the OED), However, as this article started with en-us spelling, so it continues. But meantime, in the absence of a spelling war, there really is no need to mark the lamp-posts. --John Maynard Friedman (talk) 10:51, 2 January 2019 (UTC)
