Original Burial Place of Saint Olav - perhaps

[edit]

As quoted from article statements: "Built over the burial site of Saint Olav, the king of Norway in the 11th century" and "Built into the south side of the ambulatory is a small well. A bucket could be lowered to draw up water drawn from the spring that originated from St. Olav's original burial place. (This was covered over by the construction of later cathedrals)."

Both statements appear dubious and unsourced. In the paper Arkeologi og myter: Om Nidarosdomens historie før 1200 (Archaeology and myths: The history of the Nidaros Cathedral before 1200) by Øystein Ekroll (in Hikuin, 33, Kirkearkæologi i Norden 8, Vestagder Norge 2004-2006, ISBN 8790814363, p. 77-99, summary here: http://cat.inist.fr/?aModele=afficheN&cpsidt=18358761) the author (an expert in building arcaeology and working at the restauration team of the cathedral itself - see https://no.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%98ystein_Ekroll) demonstrates how these are popular but unsourced claims, probably originally stemmning from the wishful thinking and deliberate politics/propaganda of the local medieval clerics of the cathedral chapter. The author claims, based on the best written sources of the period, later scholars, new archaeological evidence and topographic studies, that King Olav was most likely buried - not at the site of the present medieval cathedral - but at a nearby riverbank just after his murder, and only later on moved to the present resting place (after its construction).

The holy well (which was said to have sprung) at the supposed original burial place is still intact (according to the paper today it is a public fountain), but the well in the cathedral ('Olavsbrønnen') is much later, apparently made for the purpose, so as to live up to the supposed 'orginal death place of St. Olav' myth - who were really killed somewhere else in the vincity of the cathedral. Plot

[edit]

Varg Vikernes was going to blow up the cathedral with 100kg of explosives. I'm just wondering if maybe this should be mentioned in the article. Esn 11:36, 10 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

1) Varg is an idiot. 2) 100kgs wouldent have done it. 3) You should maybe go check out the cathedral. It's MASSIVE

I appreciate that this may be a bit late, but I came to this page from the article on Varg. Even if it would never have happened, maybe the plot is relevant?

-I removed the reference. I don't really find it relevant, but that's beside the point. You really need to source that kind of information properly. Lidmann (talk) 16:16, 26 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

-Varg and Euronymous never planned to blow it up and even if they did you cant prove it with any sources because Varg claimed that they where not going to blow it up. so unless you have hard proof i deleted that statement. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 198.38.69.133 (talk) 17:50, 24 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Height?

[edit]

Hello I'm wondering how high the Cathedral is, I cannot find it, no matter how much I search, I've been at norwiegean wiki(FA-class), swedish wiki, german wiki and the english one, where is this piece of information supposed to be? I believe, that wikipedia should give this sort of information(especially when it already states on the Uppsala Cathedral article clearly the height of the cathedral)

Gsmgm (talk) 18:55, 17 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

-The cathedral is just under 100 meters high, from ground level to the tip of the spire. You're right. It should be incorporated into the article. Lidmann (talk) 16:16, 26 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Google has failed me! Absolutely nothing! Both english and swedish version failed to turn up any valid sources. Gsmgm (talk) 18:49, 10 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I pissed on this yesterday.

[edit]

I'm sure the hordes of Asian tourists must have noticed it, I made sure the piss gathered in two enclaves close to the ground as much that it would have taken a few days for my urine to have evaporated. They should put some guards on this cathedral ... while I was pissing on it, people were "skating on it with bikes" in lack of better ways to express myself. While I hate christianity, this cathedral is a part of my cultural heritage, I wish they would have atleast a single guard patroling it. I wanted to run from a guard, but I was allowed to piss on it in peace. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.202.31.30 (talk) 19:05, 21 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Mayhem

[edit]

Why isn't there any information about it being included on Mayhem's album? 83.13.239.255 (talk) 15:33, 27 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

1066 or 1070?

[edit]

When should we say this building started? What real sources are there? 1066 or 1070? The article does not list many sources for such relevant factoids! Now the Internet is flooded with 1070, maybe mostly because this article says so?-71.174.175.150 (talk) 02:02, 26 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The best sources I can find seem to agree on 1070:

  • translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=no&u=ht tp://no.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nidarosdomen&prev=search
"about 1070-ca. 1300"
"Around 1070 pretended King Olav Kyrre build a bigger's Christchurch. It was of stone and was completed approximately in 1090. Olav shrine of Holy Olav's body stood on the high altar in the Church of Christ."
"Nidaros Cathedral in 1070 , the National Library ( Gallery NOR ), Norwegian Folk Museum"
  • translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=no&u=ht tp://www.nidarosdomen.no/&prev=search
"Nidaros Cathedral - Norway's national shrine - was commenced in 1070 and is built on St. Olav's Tomb."

Who are all the statues on the front?

[edit]

The 16 "top" statues (on the same horizontal level as the 16-petal flower in the middle), and all the statues below? 24.78.190.118 (talk) 00:22, 29 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
