Good work on the location co-ordinates! (20/04/2006)

I don't really know for certain, but isn't Newbridge officially only called Droichead Nua? Like Dún Laoghaire or Portlaoise or Daingean. Could anyone who lives there fill me in?

Yes, its "officially" only called Droichead Nua, but thats irrelevant here, as by far the most common name to English speakers is Newbridge, including I would wager, pretty much all of its residents. The fact that the governing authority for the area, Kildare County Council, calls it Newbridge only adds weight to this. --Kiand 17:11, 12 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

As a resident of Newbridge, I must agree. The official name is all well and good, but in reality the town is called Newbridge by everybody. I think the phrasing "Newbridge (official name:An Droichead Nua)" is appropriate. le meas Joe Byrne 23:10, 6 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Whitewater

[edit]

The recent additions by 159.134.255.120 ( 1 ) to me read almost like an advertisement for the shopping centre: (text in bold was added by the anonomous user)

The Whitewater Shopping Centre opened on the 6th April 2006, it is the largest shopping centre in Ireland outside of Dublin. The centre boasted names such as Debenhams, Marks and Spencers, Eason and Virgin Megastore. The Whitewater developement has recently caused some local unrest due to the developers reneging on their promise to construct a cinema in the centre. However, there has been an at times naive campaign against those who run the Whirewater, who promise to construct a larger cinemaplex elsewhere in the town - a promise that they are willing to make legally binding.

I do not dispute the presence of large-name shops in the centre (but I will edit phrasing to make it NPOV fact rather than POV advertising) but the second addition, in my opinion is very biased especially in the use of the word naive . I am going to declare my bias now - as a resident of the town who is angered by the attempt of the centre to back out of a proposed cinema - so I'm hardly an NPOV judge of the matter, however I feel it is factual to state that the proposal has "caused some local unrest". The apologetic inclusion at the end seems to be making excuses for something that is indisputable fact. The sentence they are willing to make it legally binding is very odd and I don't think an encyclopedia is an ideal forum for speculation on the intentions of businesses. I'm going to make an edit to water down the POVness if anyone has any issue please discuss it on the talk page Joe Byrne 17:07, 24 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Why is McGov on the famous persons list? Nobody outside of the PBS would know who he is. This preceding unsigned comment was added by 212.2.164.58 on 19 December 2006 18:55

I don't know who added him. He did receive enough newspaper coverage [1] [2] [3] [4] for it to be considered more than vanity. I don't know who added it, but I have met people from outside of Newbridge who are aware of who Ronán McGovern is. That may all change within a matter of months though. Could we do a section on bands from the area? the preceding unsigned comment was added by 213.202.142.79 20 December 2006 21:03

I don't think any band or musician from Newbridge fulfills the criteria listed at WP:MUSIC, and therefore shouldn't be included. It would also probably violate Wikipedia:Vanity. Joe Byrne -- Talk -- Contribs - :ga: - :fr: - - 15:50, 22 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ronán Mc Govern

[edit]

I have reinstated Ronán Mc Govern as a notable person. Being featured in an article on the front page of the Irish times qualifies! LittleOldMe 16:02, 5 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
