Wine region map

I've added a map based on a quite inaccurate one someone uploaded a few years ago. It's a bit vague but based on the best data I can find. I've drawn a blank trying to accurately define the boundaries of each growing area; the best sources I can find concur on the easy ones (Marlborough, Waipara, etc) but either offer no data on the smaller regions, or completely ignore them, or are good for some and wrong for others, casting the "good" data into doubt. For now, I'd suggest an approximation for all regions, rather than mark out vague areas which might be taken as actual fact. I have, at least, managed to spell the placenames right... there's an .svg version too, once I can get the fonts to work. If anyone can come up with a reliable source for ALL the growing area boundaries I'd be happy to redraw the map to suit. --mikaul^talk 02:05, 28 June 2009 (UTC)

Hi Mikaul, I know it's nine years later, but I've added a map based on the new GI definitions available on the NZIPO website (see below). If you're still around, I'd love some help with the new map I rather amateurishly cobbled together after reading Wikipedia:WikiProject Maps/Conventions (see also my note on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Maps).

New Geographical Indication classifications for New Zealand wines

I've updated the article with a sentence about these, and an appropriate ODT citation. I don't have time right now, but I'd like to review the Regions section, to correspond to these 18 new GI applications, that will come into force (most likely unopposed) next year. These areas are: Northland, Auckland, Matakana, Kumeu, Waiheke Island, Gisborne, Hawkes Bay, Central Hawkes Bay, Wairarapa, Gladstone, Martinborough, Nelson, Marlborough, Canterbury, North Canterbury, Waipara Valley, Waitaki Valley North Otago, Central Otago. Three additional "permanent" GI are also New Zealand, North Island, and South Island, which I guess is handy for the poor sod wineries in such places as Levin, New Plymouth, Pohangina Valley and Buller River. Rewrite and improve effort, 2018

For anyone reading this, I have begun a series of edits I plan to conduct over the next month or so to achieve several goals:

1. Bring the article up to date. Much of the article dates from over ten years ago, a long time in New World wine countries.
2. Reconsider and rewrite the non-NPOV parts of the article.
3. Generally improve the writing style, consolidate the article summary, and eliminate repetition.
4. Back up the article with good data sources, e.g. wine production and land area data, vineyard reports, and other statistics from New Zealand Winegrowers, annual and area-typical climate data from NIWA, and citations from standard world and NZ wine reference works (Oxford Companion 4ed, Wine Atlas, Cooper's NZ Wine Atlas, etc.)
5. Rewrite much of the regions sections, using the NZIPO material for Geographical Indications, NZW annual reports, and a good history book as starting points. Maybe in the future we can break off a few more individual region articles (Marlborough had barely two sentences!), along the lines of the Central Otago wine region article.
6. Cite wine reviews and awards to back up the inevitably more subjective material (quality, reputation, typical flavours or aromas, and so on). Bob Campbell, Michael Cooper, Geoff Kelly, Raymond Chan, NZ Cuisine, Air New Zealand Wine Awards, etc.
7. Mention some more recent trends: perhaps orange and pétillant naturel wines, sustainability, links to regional tourism, role of Pernod Ricard.

Update: It's been fun doing this over the last month or so, largely on my own! :-) I think we might also benefit from:

1. Update the production graph to show the notable industry growth 2000-2018
2. Perhaps some more graphs - pie charts (or other representations of proportion) of total vineyard area by grape variety, production by region, etc. Have a look at the snazzy Vintage Snapshots put out by NZ Winegrowers.
3. Include more about the role of New Zealand Winegrowers (and edit this article/redirection - NZW seems to have pretty much replaced the NZ Wine Institute?), incorporated in 2016 - which now represents the national industry as a whole, much in the same manner as the NZ Dairy Board. They were responsible for pushing the GI legislation, and helping the regional winegrower associations to apply.
4. Ideally someone who is a Pinot noir buff should review that section for errors, lies etc.
5. Split off some of the wine regions into separate articles?
6. Get the article reviewed?

Capitalisation of grape varieties

A note to future editors, please refer to this discussion over on Wikipedia:WikiProject Wine, with further background on /Archive 13). Wine literature since the mid 1980s has overwhelmingly shifted to fully capitalised grape varieties as proper nouns, e.g. Sauvignon Blanc over lesser- or un-capitalised alternatives. The Pinot Noir section

...could do with some rework, by someone who knows more about NZ Pinot Noir than I do; being more of a Syrah and Merlot nut myself, I haven't really followed Pinot Noir much (or, frankly, understood what the fuss is about). The article makes a point about Central Otago being so far South but it is only 45°S whereas Côte d'Or in France (arguably the World's best Pinot Noir area) is 47°N. It would seem that Pinot Noir likes a more polar location than other red varieties.OrewaTel (talk) 13:44, 25 June 2019 (UTC)

Improved lead paragraph

I think the lead is much improved. It summarises the main points of the article and it's well-crafted. You could perhaps elaborate on the different wine-growing regions, including the ones not currently named in the lead (e.g. Hawke's Bay, Cantebury), but I think it's adequate now.--Hazhk (talk) 23:31, 28 February 2018 (UTC)

Fine Wines of NZ initiative

We should probably mention this, supported by Air New Zealand, and a relatively recent thing; a judging panel annually awards trophies to a handful of the best New Zealand wines, with the aim to:

“create a definitive list of New Zealand’s best wines and wineries, independently chosen, showcasing provenance, consistency, excellence in winemaking and demonstrated evolution of fine wine production.”

Controversies and scandals

There is no coverage in the article at present of notable controversies and scandals in the New Zealand wine industry. These references provide some possible starting points: [2], [3], [4], [5], [6], [7]

Environmental impact

The environmental impact of vineyards and wine making could also be considered. Here is an article about water footprint that I found interesting: [8]. A PHD thesis on water footprint, including NZ vineyards is also available here: [9] The industry has also made significant moves towards carbon-zero. Exports

The content about exports needs significant updating. I found a few interesting snippets in recent sources. The State of the World Vine and Wine Sector 2021 report states that New Zealand had the second-largest share of bulk wine exports (defined as >10 litres) by value, at 24% of total export value (but well behind Canada at 68%) [12]. The same source reports that in 2021 New Zealand reached an all-time high of 41kha in vineyard area. This represents 0.56% of the estimated global vineyard surface area of 7.3Mha. Another source states that annual NZ wine exports reached a new high of 2.03 billion in the 12 months to Sep 2022.[13]. However, this doesn't quite line up with what is reported here: [14]. Not sure why there is a difference.

Share of the domestic market

Another interesting snippet from an Australian source commenting on the New Zealand market is that in 2021, 49.2 million litres of the 90.2 million litres sold (54.5%) was from domestic producers.[15]. The same source reports that supermarkets have around 60% of the retail trade in wine sales.
