Affiliation with Indianapolis?
[edit]Please see my post in the discussion at the SF Giants page:

Also, I believe the St. Louis NL team was moved from St. Louis to Indianapolis and renamed the Hoosiers. The book cited in the above discussion states this. The St. Louis stats end in 1886. The Hoosiers stats start in 1887. The 1887-1889 Hoosiers roster also includes 9 of the players from the St. Louis Maroons, one of whom later became a player/manager for the Hoosiers then later went on to the Giants (Jack Glasscock). —Preceding unsigned comment added by Conanian (talk • contribs) 14:53, 4 June 2010 (UTC)
Not sure how to rephrase this...
[edit]"The San Francisco Giants existed in the New York metropolitan area from 1883–1957. " No, the San Francisco Giants DID NOT exist in NY, the New York Giants did.The team is the same, but there IS a distinction there. --Khajidha (talk) 12:48, 26 July 2017 (UTC)
- I changed it to "Major League Baseball's Giants franchise home was in the New York metropolitan area from..." – wbm1058 (talk) 14:04, 26 July 2017 (UTC)
- I took a run at making a more comprehensive revision to the intro. I tried to keep the correctness of phrasing Wbm1058 brought while also shuffling sentence order and pruning some links that I felt were more trouble than they were worth. Hopefully the result feels a bit lighter and easier to read while still hitting all the critical points! —jameslucas ▄▄▄ ▄ ▄▄▄ ▄▄▄ ▄ 20:42, 27 July 2017 (UTC)
RfC regarding article titles of relocated professional sports teams in North America
[edit]An RfC relating to relocated teams' article titles using "History of" has been opened and may be of interest to editors of this article. The RfC will add language to the WP:GUIDELINE and will affect this article's title and multiple others. Please join the discussion at the above link. Requested move 18 April 2022
[edit]- The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
The result of the move request was: Moved to New York Giants (baseball) The relevant guideline allows for a partial DAB in certain cases, and there's a consensus that this case meets that higher standard for primary topic. Galobtter (pingó mió) 20:50, 16 May 2022 (UTC)
New York Giants (National League) → ? – This page was moved per an RfC, and was disputed by User:Discographer on my talk page. I'll list the choices here, which are open for discussion. Bison X (talk) 23:00, 18 April 2022 (UTC)
- History of the New York Giants (baseball) → New York Giants (National League)
- History of the New York Giants (baseball) → New York Giants (baseball)
- History of the New York Giants (baseball) → New York Giants (MLB)

Support #1The preferred title is "New York Giants," but the NFL team is the primary topic, so this page would be disambiguated to "New York Giants (baseball)" but there are 2 NYG baseball teams (New York Giants (Players' League)), so this page must be disambiguated to "New York Giants (National League)," while "New York Giants (baseball)" would redirect to New York Giants (disambiguation), since it is incomplete disambigutaion. Rgrds. --Bison X (talk) 23:09, 18 April 2022 (UTC)- Support #2 After re-reading WP:INCDAB, I seem to have glossed over the paragraph stating
In individual cases consensus may determine that a parenthetically disambiguated title that is still ambiguous has a primary topic, but the threshold for identifying a primary topic for such titles is higher than for a title without parenthetical disambiguation.
and it then links to List of partially disambiguated article titles, thanks to User:Old Naval Rooftops for providing that link. At that page, several partially dab'd pages are listed, with a good number going thru RMs such as this, but more importantly the "[higher] threshold for identifying a primary topic" appears to be greater than 20:1, but there are some much lower. The ratio of page views for this page and the Players' League page is ~179:1 over the last 90 days (20,238/113). That's not even counting the page views to this page after it was moved to "(National League)" nor the "(baseball)" redirect. Rgrds. --Bison X (talk) 17:14, 24 April 2022 (UTC)
- Support #2 After re-reading WP:INCDAB, I seem to have glossed over the paragraph stating
- Support #2 move to New York Giants (baseball), keeping in line with Boston Braves (baseball) and Texas Rangers (baseball), as any other teams already disambiguated with (National League) in their respective article's team name had ceased to play baseball by the first World Series in 1903. --Discographer (talk) 23:33, 18 April 2022 (UTC)
- Support #1 per existence of New York Giants (Players' League). Randy Kryn (talk) 03:21, 19 April 2022 (UTC)
- Support #2 or #3. Although this is nominally an INCDAB situation, partial disambiguation is allowed, and the NL club is so obviously the primary topic for "New York Giants (baseball)" that I don't believe there will be any issues with disambiguating it that way. O.N.R. (talk) 03:51, 19 April 2022 (UTC)
- The Player's League team included five future Hall of Famers. Of course all other forms should be redirect's to the main NL team, but 'National League' fulfills encyclopedic accuracy. Randy Kryn (talk) 04:00, 19 April 2022 (UTC)
- Support #2, move to New York Giants (baseball) as the most natural dab available. "National League" can refer to numerous other things besides the North American baseball league, and MLB is an acronym that may not be widely understood outside of North America. The Players' League team only lasted for one season back in the late 1800's, so I agree with O.N.R. that the NL team is the overwhelming primary topic for New York Giants (baseball). Ejgreen77 (talk) 05:51, 19 April 2022 (UTC)
- While there are other things known as "National League", I'll point out that Major League Baseball's National League is in fact the primary topic. 162 etc. (talk) 15:01, 25 April 2022 (UTC)
- Support #1 per User:Bison X. No need to make an exception to WP:PDAB in this case. 162 etc. (talk) 16:15, 19 April 2022 (UTC)
- Comment Not to complicate the discussion, but there is another option, which is to disambiguate by date. See Washington Senators (1901–1960) and Washington Senators (1891–1899). 162 etc. (talk) 16:15, 19 April 2022 (UTC)
- Washington Senators (1901–1960) coincides with Washington Senators (1961–1971). I don't know the background of the 1891 team's disambiguation, but since they played in 2 leagues maybe it was just easier. I think our listed options are sufficient for this this situation, but might not be for that one. IMO. Rgrds. --Bison X (talk) 21:53, 19 April 2022 (UTC)
- Support #2, I agree with Ejgreen77. Baseball is the most logical choice. MLB would need to be spelled out and National League could be a variety of things.
