Merge

[edit]

[[State highways in New Hampshire]] should be merged into this article because this article is the official name of the higway system and the "State highways" is merely a statement using diffent data about the highway system. This should be a quick fix. --Assawyer 19:56, 8 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have begun the work to merge, if there are those who feel it is unwise contact me and we can discuss it. --Assawyer 00:24, 9 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Merge is complete, "State highways in New Hampshire" has been fully intergrated and now redirects to this article. --Assawyer 22:09, 9 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

New Section

[edit]

Added a new section on unnumbered, state maintained roads. I included the two that I know about, there may be more. --Jayron32 13:04, 24 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Fully protected this article

[edit]

Ok, the whole "my road sign is more important than your road sign" edit war is beyond trivial, but if you want this article unprotected, please start a discussion immediately below and resolve your differences. Unless everyone involved would rather volunteer to be blocked so I can unprotect the article. I'm good with that solution too. Discuss or find yourselves blocked. You know who you are. --Jayron32 01:43, 15 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for putting your foot down. –Fredddie 01:48, 15 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
If it's going to be an issue, we can just put a blank shield with no number there. —Scott5114 [EXACT CHANGE ONLY] 01:56, 15 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I find the initial edit unnecessary in the first place and was trying to revert, but to no avail. Thanks for this protection. Chinissai (talk) 13:08, 15 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
The edit may be unnecessary, but why is a big deal? The blank shield is a great idea to solve this, but what's the big deal? Aiden2121 (talk) 13:20, 15 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
If you ask me what the shields should be for the infobox (NOT including the blank, which I think is the best solution) it's NH 10 (replacing NH 9), NH 12A, NH 25 (replacing NH 28) and NH 101. The image that is currently NH 108 I think should become NH 11. Just my opinion. Aiden2121 (talk) 16:46, 15 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
May I ask WHY you think those shields are better than the existing? It really helps if you help others around you understand your reasoning so disputes can be resolved quickly. To start, let me try with the existing, which is not my edit in the first place anyway. You probably want coverage for 1-, 2-, and 3-digit shields, so NH-9, NH-28, and NH-101 cover that. NH-16A covers auxiliary routes. Just saying "I don't like it" is not enough to change something; there has to be more fundamental reason than that. Please see WP:JDL. Chinissai (talk) 17:46, 15 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
My reasoning is that NH 12A serves towns along the Vermont border, NH 25 is a major scenic highway through the Ossipee Mountains, and NH 11 is a major alternate to US 4. There is my reasoning. Aiden2121 (talk) 18:12, 15 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I hear you, but that (at least to me) does not explain why _shields_ for those routes are better than the existing _shields_. If this article were about [scenic/significant/etc--add your own] routes in New Hampshire, I would give some weight to your argument. I did try earlier to use NH-12A for a more significant auxiliary routes, other routes already being significant, only to find that you still did not like that. In any case, I don't think this article is about presenting significant routes; in particular, what shields are the representatives of all the NH shields. I think the existing shields suffice for that, so why make it a big deal and waste your time to change to something that is not better? Chinissai (talk) 18:39, 15 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
It may not be better, but it's not worse. It's acceptable. They can be good representatives. I see how you're thinking. But I was careful picking these, and I made careful revisions. Aiden2121 (talk) 18:55, 15 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I am saying that you did not have to spend time carefully picking new shields that are not better. Please see WP:BROKEN. You could have spent that time making more useful edits to other articles. I am not sure what you meant by making "careful revisions," but I don't have a problem (yet?) with your edits on other pages, so no need to mention that. I think we have reached a conclusion that our philosophies differ. I will let others decide, although I will immediately accept only the change from NH-16A to NH-12A and retain the other shields if that would resolve the dispute and reconcile the difference in philosophy. Chinissai (talk) 19:22, 15 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
About letting others decide:no one else really did anything. I requested another editor to help out;that is still pending. I'll try to find more editors who can decide. I don't know if they'll accept. Aiden2121 (talk) 19:38, 15 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
This is fine. Thanks for reaching out to other editors. I hope they will be of some help. Chinissai (talk) 19:46, 15 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
The other editors should be active soon if they accept to join. Aiden2121 (talk) 19:59, 15 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

On the topic of using blank shields: First off, my philosophy is that if new things are not better, stay with the old ones. I think shields with numbers are better to contrast with other states. For example, NH shields remain square regardless of the number of digits, while NY shields widen for 3-digit routes. I don't know how significant this is for the article, so I would like to hear from others (not just the disputed party), but again I find that the existing shields are already good representatives of NH shields. Chinissai (talk) 18:45, 15 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I had a thought earlier but wasn't around a computer to offer it. What if we had a sort-of-random number generator that picked out shields for us. Then there'd be no point for reverting or changing because they'd be different every time the page loaded. This potentially could be extended to other states; I'd set it up for Iowa in a heartbeat. –Fredddie 23:19, 15 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Me likey. TCN7JM 02:12, 16 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
That seems like a reasonable solution. If such a work around could be done, it would be useful at ALL highway system articles, in the U.S. and abroad. Can anyone get on that? --Jayron32 02:20, 16 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

There's a factor everyone seems to be overlooking here. This is an article entitled "New Hampshire Highway System". The Interstate and U.S. Highways in the state are included in that system. The infobox should be showing three shields, one for an Interstate in New Hampshire, one for a U.S. Highway in the state, and finally one for a state highway. When deciding on the choices for Michigan State Trunkline Highway System, I selected the longest of each type.

If there are separate list articles created the three types of highways, then the infoboxes on those lists can be set to display some diversity, using different styles used over the years and displaying varying numbers. Otherwise, this article should have the representatives of the three types of state highway in New Hampshire, and leave the variations for the body of the article. Imzadi 1979  06:39, 16 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Great idea. Aiden2121 (talk) 12:09, 18 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Using the Michigan situation as a template, the infobox should use the markers for I-93, US 3, NH 16, and the Everett Turnpike. These are longest Interstate, US, and state highways and the longest of the turnpikes.
If separate lists are created, along the line of List of Interstate Highways in Michigan, List of U.S. Highways in Michigan and List of state trunklines in Michigan, then the infoboxes on those should use a variety of numbers based on the different designs used in the past. If no, then something similar should appear using {{multiple image}} in the body of the article. In that case, I would choose different numbers from the infobox. Imzadi 1979  02:11, 19 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Protection on the article has lapsed, and I took the opportunity to update the infobox as mentioned above. I have also created List of Interstate Highways in New Hampshire and List of U.S. Routes in New Hampshire, each of which needs a few pieces of data filled in for the tables. Later on this weekend, we can start to create List of state routes in New Hampshire so that the other entries in New Hampshire Highway System#Numbered state highways are in a separate list with full information per WP:USRD/STDS/L. For now, I've only listed the longest highway in the infoboxes on those list articles. Imzadi 1979  19:42, 22 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
