Heraldry

[edit]

IMO, the heraldry info is dodgy. It is misleading to imply that a certain heraldic charge has a specific meaning to every coat of arms, or to every family or individual who bears those arms. Unless a source specifically states that a charge on a Nevin coat refers to magic or the Crusades, or anything else, it's original research to assume it does. Charges are borne in heraldry for any number of reasons. Just because some website says azure means "peace", or that a crescent refers to the "Middle East", or whatever, does not necessarily have any relevance to the heraldry of the Nevins. See WP:SYNTH - "Do not combine material from multiple sources to reach or imply a conclusion not explicitly stated by any of the sources. If one reliable source says A, and another reliable source says B, do not join A and B together to imply a conclusion C that is not mentioned by either of the sources". --Brianann MacAmhlaidh (talk) 08:59, 19 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Scotland/Ireland

[edit]

This article makes it seem like all Nevins belong to one big happy Gallowglass family. Woulfe regarded the English Nevin to be a form of three different Gaelic surnames and atleast three different families.

  • Mac NAOIMHÍN, "a South Leinster and also a Scottish surname. To be distinguished from Mac Cnáimhín".
  • Mac CNÁIMHÍN, a Galway family with Ui Maine ancestry.
  • Ó CNÁIMHÍN, an old Munster family of Dalcassian descent.

If Woulfe is regarded as a reliable source, the article should make it clear that Nevin can be an Anglicised form of different surnames, borne by different families, with different histories.--Brianann MacAmhlaidh (talk) 09:31, 19 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
