Infobox change

[edit]
Netherlands Coastguard
Jurisdictional structure
Operations jurisdictionNetherlands
Specialist jurisdiction
  • Coastal patrol, marine border protection, marine search and rescue.

Refer to my recent edit to change infobox. Although Netherlands coast guard is part of navy. It's role is mainly on law enforcement, similar case with gendarmerie (also same as Royal Marechaussee on Netherlands case). Since WP have Template:Infobox law enforcement agency then it'll be more appropriate to use that infobox than infobox military unit. Ckfasdf (talk) 23:41, 29 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

It’s also tasked with Search and rescue should we try fire department infobox too? Because there are many missions attached to the department (and under the MoD) is why it has been place under a military box. see also
@FOX 52: Coast guards (either civilian agency or part of armed force) usually have 3 prevalent roles, which are: maritime law enforcement, maritime search and rescue and border control. Infobox LEA already sums it those roles as seen on the side. some coast guard who are part of armed forces, may have secondary roles on defense, but not as prevalent as those 3 roles above. Regarding fire dept infobox, refer to its usage section : A fire department infobox may be used for any fire department in the world. It has been specifically designed such that it can work with departments from multiple different countries., so it should not be used for coast guards. Regarding coast guards page that still use military unit infobox, actually it was my plan to change all of them. Again because their role are primarily are those 3 roles not on defense. some coast guard didn't even state defense on their role/task/mission. for example:
Well don't just arbitrarily start changing boxes, because "one" of their roles is enforcing fishery laws. I see the LEA box has slots for the badge & patch of their perspective departments. So what are you going to put there? Last time I checked I haven’t any Coast Guard Uniforms with a law enforcement badge. Even your own edit is incorrect, for one it’s called a racing stripe not a flag, (or Service Mark) and the one you applied doesn’t even belong to Sweden, it’s from the Netherlands. – FOX 52 (talk) 03:27, 1 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@FOX 52: Refer to MOS:IBX, infobox should summarizes key features of the page's subject. As I mention earlier, key feature/role of coast guards are maritime law enforcement (not just fishery law) and maritime search&rescue, not on defense (as defense is minor/secondary role). So, it's not arbitrarily.
Some coast guard also have badge such as USCG as shown on the side. Regarding those parameter, if the are no badges available on WP or commons, then just leave it blank. Or, we can put Racing stripe since it was commonly found on other coast guard page that uses LEA infobox (unlike badges, all coast guard have this insgina)
Regarding my mistake, I am only a human so it is possible for me to make mistake as you point it out.Ckfasdf (talk) 05:11, 1 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
So the badge you pulled up is for a specific division with-in the CG (Coast Guard Investigative Service) which should have a LEA box. - Just like the Navy's NCIS. But that dosen't put the Navy as a whole in a LEA box. - FOX 52 (talk) 00:38, 2 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
It's just minor detail, didn't change the fact that coast guard is law enforcement agency per https://www.work.uscg.mil/Missions/ (even though it's part of Military/Navy). Ckfasdf (talk) 01:08, 2 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
To put in your word. Why do you insist to use military unit infobox just because "one" of their minor/secondary roles is defense. Some of coast guards didn't have mention role in defense. Ckfasdf (talk) 01:15, 2 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The Military box has more parameters in line than the LEA box does (thats why I showed you the badge situation) - FOX 52 (talk) 06:26, 2 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
True, military infobox has more parameter for insginia, but more image parameter doesn't justify the usage of that infobox. IMO, it's the purpose of infobox is more justifiable. Afterall, you can put badge image outside infobox. Ckfasdf (talk) 06:37, 2 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
You have to remember the reader doesn't know the difference between a mil box or a LEA box - But I can't imagine the L.A.P.D. page with-out it's main symbol the badge not inside the box. And that's why the community (Wikipedia) as a whole has gone with Mil box when it came to Coast Guard users. (the parameters just fit better) - FOX 52 (talk) 07:17, 2 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Again true, ordinary reader may not know difference between infoboxes. Therefore, consistency between coast guard pages should be prioritized, as coast guards around the world have similar roles. So, it doesn't make sense if the infobox between coast guards are different. (compare Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency and United States Coast Guard) . Sorry but the USCG is no where near just enforcement- combat overseas, war time, Naval exercisers, SAR missions, Search & rescue, environmental rescues, humanitarian relief and it falls under US Armed Forces - FOX 52 (talk) 16:08, 2 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, but it's mission said otherwise. It has defence function, but it's predominantly about maritime law enforcement. After all, it was under DoHS. Ckfasdf (talk) 22:23, 2 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Falls under Royal Netherlands Navy - FOX 52 (talk) 04:50, 27 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
