In September of 1875 a fire broke out in the main working area known as "The Tunnel", a converted, semi-underground bunker used in World War II for manufacturing torpedoes. Twelve men died in this fire. Early reports attributed the fire to improper installation of an incinerator, which had been recently installed to vent up through an interior wall without adequate insulation around the vent pipe. Testimony given by at least one witness during the subsequent investigation supported this; the wall where the Navy later stated that an electrical short started the fire was cool to the touch even when the area was filling with smoke and a fire was evident.
