Edit summary dated June 12, 2009 on intro
[edit]Hi, till Aug 4, 08 the last sentence of the intro to the article read 'Since then a number of other national law schools have been established all over India and various other States are also considering options to establish such schools.' however on Aug 10, 08 an anon changed to a potentially controversial and unreferenced 'While a number of other institutes modelled on the latter have been established across the country since then, it is generally acknowledged that the National Law School and the West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences are the premier establishments imparting legal education in the country and arguably the best represented law schools among lawyers at top companies and law firms both in India and abroad.' (emphasis added), later on May 13, 09 a new user changed it to 'While a number of ... generally acknowledged that the National Law School and the NALSAR University of Law are the premier ....' Both the claims (by anon and the new user) were never referenced, contained weasel words and are potentially controversial as the law students from various universities would like to change them in future and put their own universities name instead. Hence to avoid such repeated and potentially disrupting edits, I have reverted the last line of the intro to the more docile Aug 4, 08 version. LegalEagle (talk) 04:32, 12 June 2009 (UTC)
- Your concern is right LegalEagle, adding one or two references to the rankings of law schools conducted by various magazines will surely make such statements NPOV. Trying to find out links. Amartyabag TALK2ME 11:10, 12 June 2009 (UTC)
Requested move

No consensus to move. Vegaswikian (talk) 06:43, 26 February 2012 (UTC)
Autonomous law schools in India → National Law Universities – The law schools are more popularly known as National Law Universities or NLUs. I am requesting the move per WP:COMMON NAME. Amartyabag TALK2ME 15:44, 14 February 2012 (UTC)
- or should it be named as National law universities as per WP:CAPS. Amartyabag TALK2ME 14:45, 15 February 2012 (UTC)
- National law universities would be the preferred capitalisation, as noted, if the name change is appropriate. ENeville (talk) 22:06, 15 February 2012 (UTC)
- Oppose. Wikipedia is worldwide, National is subjective to the country/nation/region. The proposed name is ambiguous outside of the Indian context. One could argue that all law universities in a specific country are National Law Universities. --UnQuébécois (talk) 17:32, 21 February 2012 (UTC)
- Is there any other university in the world which teach only law and they are named in a manner like "National Law University" to be included in a common page related to them? Even if there are few such universities which exist, the Indian National Law universities will act as a WP:PRIMARYTOPIC as it "has substantially greater enduring notability and educational value than any other topic associated with that term." Moreover, we have National Institutes of Technology but we do not disambiguate it as it is a class of institutes, which has its own reputation and notability. Amartyabag TALK2ME 04:24, 26 February 2012 (UTC)
- Comment - would be better to clarify where they are e.g. National law universities of India or National law universities in India? Green Giant (talk) 01:28, 25 February 2012 (UTC)
- Or National Law Universities (India)? Not sure if there is a "policy" on such, we have École Polytechnique de Montréal - , Concordia University (Quebec), Concordia University (California) and such.--UnQuébécois (talk) 01:53, 25 February 2012 (UTC)
- National law universities (India) would be a better option. Amartyabag TALK2ME 03:16, 25 February 2012 (UTC)
- Personally I dislike the use of brackets or parentheses unless it is absolutely essential. Probably somewhere there are guidelines but I really think parentheses just make an article title look awkward, as if the person who wrote it seemed uncertain of what the title was. However, if you really want "(India)" then I am not going to oppose that. Green Giant (talk) 03:26, 25 February 2012 (UTC)
- National law universities (India) would be a better option. Amartyabag TALK2ME 03:16, 25 February 2012 (UTC)
- Oppose. "Autonomous law schools of India" is an exact description. "National law universities" implies nationalisation, government-owned or public sector wheras in India such autonomous bodies can also include private sector. To the uninitiated "National Law Universities" also seems to sound like an association such as a franchise. AshLin (talk) 05:31, 25 February 2012 (UTC)
- National law schools/universities are a class itself, they are established by Act of State Legislatures, are autonomous in the sense they are unitary non-affiliating universities and imparts only legal education. They are generally self-financed like the IIMs. Earlier Regional Engineering Colleges were controlled by the state governments, and in a sense the NLUs function in the same manner. In India, there is no private "autonomous" institutions imparting legal education, as they fail to meet the criteria of being an unitary university which impart legal education only. There are some private universities, which have a law department/faculty/school, but they doesn't fulfill the criteria of being an unitary or autonomous in the sense. Amartyabag TALK2ME 14:54, 25 February 2012 (UTC)
- Support move to National law universities. As Amartya describes, these universities are a class of autonomous schools which are state-run. — Nearly Headless Nick {C} 03:15, 26 February 2012 (UTC)
- Yes but what state runs them? What Nation are they national to? Are there no other Law schools in any other countries that are referred to as the "National law university"? Pakistan seems to have a National law university. It seems that each NLU has (or should have) it's own wiki entry listed with the actual name of the university: National_Law_University#National_Law_Schools. — Preceding unsigned comment added by UnQuébécois (talk • contribs) 04:15, 26 February 2012 (UTC)

The result of the proposal was not moved. I'm inclined to agree with Andrewa that relisting would not be helpful. When your entire argument is appealing to arguments that didn't prevail in a previous request, there's not much that can be done. --BDD (talk) 17:59, 24 March 2014 (UTC)
Autonomous law schools in India → ? – The law schools are more popularly known as National Law Universities abbreviated NLUs. I am requesting the move per WP:COMMON NAME. Autonomous law schools is a non-identifiable name, as it is not referred to in media or usage in other places. Please refer to my other arguments in the previous RM. Amartyabag TALK2ME 08:33, 4 March 2014 (UTC)
- Oppose. None of these arguments cite any evidence at all, and the rationale for this nomination seems to miss the point completely. The current descriptive name seems entirely adequate in terms of WP:AT, as was pointed out in the previous RM. I considered relisting, but is there any point?
