[edit]By the early 70's there was a consensus among sports media and fans that the NCAA Tournament was not as good as it should be because second- and third-place teams in the major conferences were generally far superior to the championship teams of lesser conferences, and that these teams deserved to be included in it, in addition or in lieu of the "small conference" champions. The NCAA resisted this idea at first and allowed the commissioners of the major conferences to begin this tournament as a compromise. I agree with the article in that it was also an effort to kill off the NIT which was still seen at the time as something of a competitor. 72.106.151.249 (talk) 01:57, 15 March 2021 (UTC)
