Nassau Senior
[edit]How did this man come by his name, especially his first name? Soczyczi (talk) 19:07, 25 January 2008 (UTC)
- Rather amusingly, I'd always assumed he was the senior of two (father and son, uncle and nephew or whatever) - he is the sort of long-forgotten economist who gets mentioned in footnotes. I came here recently knowing nothing about him, to look him up apropos of a book I was reading about the Irish Famine. I can't be the only person who didn't realise "Senior" was his surname.Paulturtle (talk) 05:55, 27 December 2023 (UTC)
New research
[edit]Based on new research in 2003-2007, I suggest to add a few words on Nassau W. Senior's relationship with Alexis de Tocqueville (they were good friends), Jenny Lind and Chopin (Senior was Lind's marriage counsellor in her failed attempt to marry Chopin in May 1849 - ref. note 34 under Chopin), and Mrs George Grote (she was Lind's friend and accompanied Senior in Paris, May 1849). Moreover, the existing article could be structured in two ot three sections. Any comments before I would give it a try? Jean de Beaumont (talk) 08:37, 20 March 2008 (UTC)
- I have uploaded the new information. Any comments? Jean de Beaumont (talk) 09:54, 21 March 2008 (UTC)
Meaning
[edit]What does this sentance mean? "This is one of the points frequently quoted by theorists who propose that the inaction of the British government during the Great Irish Famine is tantamount to deliberate genocide and the laissez-faire attitude of the government in supplying aid & relief." Does it mean that laissez-faire was a cover story for the government's genocidle intent or what? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.150.94.194 (talk) 20:16, 8 June 2009 (UTC)
Clarification
[edit]Can it be made clear who Jenny Lind was going to marry but did not - and "Mrs George Grote" is now wrong format (it should be 'X Grote, wife of George Grote).
Nassau's wife was a Poor Law inspector - see The Times, Saturday, Dec 05, 1874; pg. 6. Jackiespeel (talk) 18:35, 12 October 2009 (UTC)
