Use this button to put your signature
  • When writing comments here on the talk page (or on any talk page in Wikipedia), don't forget to add a signature: just type two dashes and four tildes (--~~~~) after your comment, like this:
Wow, this article is getting really nice! --~~~~
  • Alternatively, you can use the signature button (pictured on the right). Place the cursor at the end of your comment and click the button (in both cases the dash+tilde will be converted automatically into your username and a timestamp).
  • When replying, indent your comment one level below the comment you're replying to. Use colons for the indentation like this (notice how the last comment here is actually in reply to the first one and therefore indented one level below it):
Wow, this article is getting really nice! --Editor A
: Isn't it kinda short? --Editor B
:: Well, we can use your help to make it longer. ;) --Editor A
::: Oh, erm, okay, I'll think about it... --Editor B
:::: Yeah, dude, Wikipedia needs you! --Editor C

  • If you want to draw somebody's attention specifically, use {{ping}} with that person's username like this:
{{ping|Egonw}} Could you please take a look at my last edits? --~~~~
Some people have multiple usernames or use a completely different name in their signature. To check what to use in {{ping}}, click on their name in the edit history or in their signature—this will open their user page; the username is the part after User:.

Editing the articles

  • Use the “edit” link next to the section you plan to work on, instead of the one at the top right of the article. This helps to avoid conflicts with other users who may be editing the article at the same time—as long as each one is working on a different section.
  • Before publishing your edits to the article, fill in the summary field with some concise information about the nature of your edits (e.g. “expanded the "Modelling" section”, “added more references for the roadmaps”, “corrected a few typos”, etc.)
  • Don't edit for too long without publishing. This increases the probability of a conflict with another user's edits (if such conflict happens, you will be presented with a special interface to merge yours and the other guy's edits).
  • However, if you make a lot of changes, don't publish after each small change. It's best to group your changes in chunks: e.g. correct the typos in one section (remember to use the edit link next to it, not the one above the article), publish, expand it with another paragraph, publish, add yet another paragraph, publish, correct another section, publish, expand that one with a paragraph, publish, and so on.
  • While not obligatory, it's usually a good idea to say something about you on your user page (of course, don't put any sensitive info there).
  • Be bold! Don't be afraid to edit. Making mistakes is a pretty normal thing here and most users will be very happy to help.
  • In particular, don't worry that you might mess something up: it's always possible to revert an article to any previous “good” condition.
  • In the article history, there are links that allow you to easily “undo” an edit. The last edit can always be undone; for previous ones it may sometimes not be possible.
  • You can see how any previous version of the page looked like by clicking on the respective timestamp in the history.
  • You can also revert to that previous version if you click the “Edit” link at the top right and then publish the page.

Moving

Hey, guys, just don't forget to move the page to the main namespace (just replace the “Draft” namespace with “Main”) once it's ready, so that the edit history isn't lost. You probably knew that already anyway. And good job, really. Kudos! :)
