- Result was to move NLF (disambiguation) to NLF.--Aervanath lives in the Orphanage 02:28, 19 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
- As the Vietcong have gone back into old history, are they a dominant meaning of "NLF" any more? Anthony Appleyard (talk) 07:00, 10 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose. It seems to be the primary use of those listed on NLF (disambiguation). The only alternative is an Israeli trade union. The status quo seems OK; the stats tool [1] says ~300 hits per month for NLF (disambiguation) compared to ~1000 hits per month for NLF. Sam5 (talk) 12:13, 10 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
- Normally, where there is any chance that a significant minority of searchers want something other than the posited primary, I am in favor of the disambiguation page being the default. However, here, I agree with Sam5 that the National Liberation Front of Vietnam is the appropriate default. --Bejnar (talk) 00:20, 11 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
- Support. I don't think many people are likely to enter "NLF" expecting to be taken to a page on the Viet Cong; I expect such a person would be much more interested in a page listing the various things "NLF" could stand for, including a link to the Viet Cong article if that turns out to be the meaning they intended. Another benefit of the proposed move is that the number of hatnotes on Viet Cong would be reduced by one. --Quuxplusone (talk) 04:02, 12 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
My point is, NLF doesn't really stand for anything other than National Liberation Front. Sam5 (talk) 20:59, 13 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
- Support. --Una Smith (talk) 16:44, 13 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
- Reason? it's not a vote. Sam5 (talk) 20:59, 13 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
- Per above. --Una Smith (talk) 22:17, 13 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Comments
[edit]The acronym NLF often refers to National Liberation Front. National Liberation Front is a large disambiguation page. It also can refer to any of the below. --Una Smith (talk) 22:40, 13 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
- Non-lactose fermenter; see Sorbitol-MacConkey agar
- NLF airfoil; see Michimasa Fujino
- New Life Fellowship Church; see Freedom of religion in Vietnam
- Thanks for pointing these out. The disambiguation page needs a bit of work. Sam5 (talk) 23:02, 13 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
- Done added these links. Anthony Appleyard (talk) 07:39, 14 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
- Cleaned up NLF (disambiguation). --Una Smith (talk) 16:05, 14 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
- The "National Liberation Front" page is a lot of nonsense created by someone who wanted to spite me. Most of the groups listed don't even use the words "national" and "liberation" in the name. "National Liberation Front" should be a redirect to Viet Cong. The number of hats on Viet Cong can reduced without changing the NLF page. I suspect that the most common reason users type in NLF as a seach term is because they are mistyping NFL, so this option should be put on the disambiguation page. If this option isn't going to be added, I don't see any reason to change the redirect to Viet Cong. The other options are all pretty obscure. Kauffner (talk) 17:39, 14 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
- I already added a link to NFL on NLF (disambiguation). --Una Smith (talk) 20:35, 14 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

- I agree that there is a lot of stuff to disambiguate here. However, I feel, maybe from a warped perspective of history, that Viet Cong is the appropriate default. Although comparisons can be invidious (WP:WAX), there are good reasons on the Paris disambiguation page to point directly to it: Paris, the Trojan lover; Paris Hilton, who seems to get endless press; and even Paris, Texas, which itself has to be disambiguated. Nonetheless, it seems that the capital of France is an appropriate default. One of the problems would be that if "NFL" does not point to Viet Cong, should it point to NLF (disambiguation) or to National Liberation Front, a disambiguation page. Or should those two pages be merged? By pointing directly to Viet Cong I think that most users (except American football dyslexics) will be better served. Nonetheless, I see that the consensus is otherwise, so I will bow to it. I would urge that the two disambiguation pages be merged so that a searcher for the NLF who doesn't know that it is at Viet Cong does not have to go through two disambiguation pages, and that the NFL get top billing. --Bejnar (talk) 18:11, 14 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
- As in, "not to be confused with NFL"? --Una Smith (talk) 06:31, 16 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
- I would move NLF (disambiguation) to NLF, and disambiguate incoming links to NLF per Wikipedia:Disambiguation pages with links. Those incoming links need disambiguation anyway. --Una Smith (talk) 20:35, 14 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
- In which case, given Sam5's comment below, I withdraw my bow, as improvidently given, and reassert my opposition, as Una Smith's proposed solution does not seem to fix the problem, namely, ready access to the Viet Cong article for searchers typing in NLF. --Bejnar (talk) 02:23, 15 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
- This assumes NLF has a primary topic, and that the primary topic is the Vietnam one. But is that true? --Una Smith (talk) 15:12, 15 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

- (To clarify: I struck-out my opposition, but that doesn't mean that I support the move. With Kauffner's comment, I don't think there is a strong consensus either way. Sam5 (talk) 19:18, 14 December 2008 (UTC))[reply]
- Re Kauffner's comment, some of the entries on NLF (disambiguation) may not belong there, but many do. National Liberation Front is a common name of convenience, in English, for numerous political groups with official names in other languages (even other scripts). --Una Smith (talk) 06:31, 16 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Does anyone here care enough to try to find evidence that the Vietcong is the primary topic of NLF? --Una Smith (talk) 07:15, 16 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
- Use of "NLF" as a search term goes up and down with American football news. People type in "NLF" in September to January at about three times the rate they do in June.[2] There is no seasonal variation for "Vietcong" or "Viet Cong," so that is clearly not the primary topic.[3] Seasonal variation for NFL is also about 3X.[4] There are noticable upward spikes for NLF on Mondays during the football season.[5]
- Traffic at "NLF (disambiguation)" is almost a third of what it is at "NLF". I can only conclude that a significant number of NFL fans type in "NLF," get redirected to "Viet Cong," still don't realized they have mistyped, and then use the hat to go to "NLF (disambiguation)".
