Economist reaction to Nobel

Seeing as the 'Recognition' section has references to Bill Clinton showing support for Yunus getting the Nobel, I'm going to go ahead and reference the Economist, who basically said that the Nobel committee should have not given the award to anybody instead of giving it to Yunus. I think the Economist is a noteworthy enough source to bear mention (especially if Clinton gets mention), and anyone who has read Yunus' book should realize that he's kind of a windbag who somehow convinced people that he's the father of microfinance. See the article for my edit. Mpolansky (talk) 09:32, 28 June 2008 (UTC)

Critisism section

I heard Dr. Yunus' speach at the Nobel Peace Price award ceremony earlier today. A few of the points in the Critisism section of the article contradicts what he said in his speach. What is correct?

The critisism section claims the bank gets funding from overseas organizations. Dr. Yunus' claimed today that this is not the case anymore. Also, the critisism section claims the bank does not reach the poorest of the poor due to the need for them to pay interest. Dr. Yunus' said in his speach that they had special programmes for beggars where they don't have to pay interest. Can anyone clarify this? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Gosub (talkcontribs) 00:02, 11 December 2006 (UTC).

Aga Khan award for architecture?

Why has a banker and economist been given the Aga Khan award for architecture? There are multiple awards given out by the Aga Khan Foundation so perhaps this refers to one of those other awards and the writer has confused them. If he has indeed won the Architecture prize, perhaps some reference should be made to buildings desgined by him.

The Grameen Bank Housing Programme was one of the winners, that year, according to http://www.akdn.org/agency/akaa/fourthcycle/awards87-89.html. Whether that should count as an award for Muhammad Yunus is another question. Rojomoke 14:31, 13 October 2006 (UTC)

Needs brush up

Its a great news that Dr. Yunus has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. I'm sure the hits on his biography page has increased exponentially today. But those who are changing the contents, please be careful. Same quotes are being repeated from the Nobel committee's presentation of the award. Also, there are typos. Please remember that it's better not to give any information, rather than giving poor quality information. For those editing, please take your time to read the whole article and edit only the sections required. Eendrani 14:55, 13 October 2006 (UTC)

Unnecessary Information

http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Muhammad_Yunus#Nobel_Winners_of_the_Subcontinent Is this information really relevant under Dr. Yunus' entry? If no one opposes I'll remove or shorten this section. Or, may be it could be moved to it's own entry. -- Abid Ahmed 15:06, 13 October 2006 (UTC)

I agree, and have removed this irrelevant and speculative section. --Ragib 15:11, 13 October 2006 (UTC)
I agree with Abid Ahmed on shorten it or have its own article, but do not agree with Ragib, who has removed it totally, Ragib is saying it is irrelevent, but, obviously there is relavance, "Bengali" Nobel winner, or, "South-Asian sub-continent Nobel winner", like Dr. Yunus. Bose or chowdhury entry could have been compromised. (View removed data here). ~Tarikash 15:35, 13 October 2006 (UTC).

Ok, I don't want to be anal, but in order to make this a credible article, we need to get rid of information that may be superfluous. Is this section necessary? Are they a credible source like NY Times (most influential list)? Probably not. http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Muhammad Yunus#One of the Best Living Bengalis -- Abid Ahmed 15:28, 13 October 2006 (UTC)

If this section One of the Best Living Bengalis can be kept, so can that section Nobel Winners of the Subcontinent, as well, a short version, at least. (View removed data here). ~Tarikash 16:01, 13 October 2006 (UTC).
Well, I think the list is nearly irrelevant. The living Bengali one.Tarif Ezaz Bangladesh 20:37, 13 October 2006 (UTC)
I merged it with the awards section. The piece is unreferenced, and not very significant anyway. Muktadhara NY is not representative of any significant population at all. --Ragib 22:52, 13 October 2006 (UTC)

Reference Problem

In order to provide reference to the section where unwillingness to give loans by the traditional banks are written, I checked the daily star of October 14. But it is very clear that they just copy and paste those lines from wiki. As the daily is a renouned one, should it still be used as a reference for that part?Tarif Ezaz Bangladesh 19:49, 13 October 2006 (UTC)

Another Section

I think another section is necessary to highlight his later carrier. Because it's not appropriate to include Nobel Prize information in the 'Education and Early Carrier' section. There are other necessary information also to give.Bangladesh Tarif Ezaz Bangladesh 20:32, 13 October 2006 (UTC)

I agree with you. Many thanks to Ragib, for making the new section on "Nobel prize", and including/presenting/displaying the exact Quote and other data, in a much nicer/better way. ~Tarikash 06:59, 16 October 2006 (UTC).

Academic titles

Please do not add "Professor" or "Doctor" before Yunus' name in the first sentence of the article. Such titles are not appropriate in an encyclopedia article. You may state that he is a doctor or professor, but do not refer to him as "Doctor Yunus" or "Professor Yunus" in the article. Per the Wikipedia Manual of Style: "Academic and professional titles (such as 'Doctor' or 'Professor') should not be used before the name in the initial sentence or in other uses of the person's name." Kaldari 23:16, 14 October 2006 (UTC)

Well, i disagree with your this opinion. He has earned and certified to use the "Dr." in front of his name like any other Ph.D. holder. You, or me, or, some other may not value it, but, the fact is that, he earned it. He is awared many "Doctorate" degrees as well. And he is also entitled to use the word "Professor" since he is very very very expert and pioneer in his expertise AND elected by board/committee of other expert to represent his expert view on his line, AND agreed by everyone, that he is an expert figure in his line, which entitles him, to be called by the word "Professor", PUBLICLY. AND not only by one board/commitee, by MANY, and many, not to mention, countless public. And he has PROVEN his experties also, through the "Grameen bank" and the difference he has made on the poor people (financially) all over the world, in many level, by even winning (/awarded with) a prestigious Nobel prize, the honor. He is always trying to reach various level of people, by using his experties, thus, he can be called, identified by the word Professor in front of his name. ~Tarikash 07:12, 16 October 2006 (UTC).

I now see that, you've removed those titles !!! why aren't / haven't you removing /removed similar titles, from Abdus Salam, Amartya Sen, Sheldon Lee Glashow, Richard E. Taylor, Clive Granger, James Mirrlees, Richard Stone, William Arthur Lewis, John Hicks, ETC articles (who are all Nobel award/honor winner), or the "Sir" title from many other articles ? please explain in detail, WHY you've removed it, and WHY not from the others ? ? ? difference ? Many thanks. ~Tarikash 08:08, 16 October 2006 (UTC).

Suggesting/recommending to add "DLitt" or Litt.D., "DCL", LL.D. , "DSc", etc before the Ph.D., (after his name), as well. Because he holds following honorary degrees(honoris causa) : Doctor of Letters (DLitt), Doctor of Civil Law (DCL), Doctor of Laws (LLD), Doctor of Science (DSc) in Economics, etc, which are even more prestigious than Ph.D. For more see List of Awards, Doctor (title), Academic degree. Thanks. ~Tarikash 10:35, 16 October 2006 (UTC).

Awards

Here in this line "Additionally, Prof. Yunus has been awarded 27 honorary doctorate degrees (all but one a doctorate), and 15 special awards.", what is the "doctorate" inside the braces referring to ? needs further rectification or removed, cause, those 27 ARE Honorary Doctorate Degrees. Also see Doctor (title), Doctorate, Academic degree, Ph.D., etc articles. ~Tarikash 03:28, 17 October 2006 (UTC).

Perhaps s/he wanted the attention of someone from an Indian background and s/he thought this would be a good place to get one? Who knows... In any case, s/he didn't change the Ravi Shankar article which already says sitar and appears to have done so since the beginning (although perhaps someone changed it at some stage which I missed but it wasn't recently) so the above comment is even more bizzarre. Even Google doesn't help. BTW, there is a setar but Ravi Shankar is indeed a sitar player AFAIK. Nil Einne 21:04, 20 October 2006 (UTC)

Yunus' wife

What is the name of the wife of Yunus ? Vera Forostenko [1] or Afroji Yunus (en:) or Afroza [2] ? Pyb 16:19, 19 October 2006 (UTC)

Dr. Yunus married twice ... his first wife was Vera Forostenko, and they had a daughter named Monica Yunus who is a pianist in New York. That marriage ended in a divorce ... soon after Yunus returned to Bangladesh. Dr. Afroji Yunus is his 2nd wife. They have a daughter, Dina Yunus. --Ragib 16:33, 19 October 2006 (UTC)
WEll the article needs to be revised then. It's sounds really odd - and jumpy - I quote " They were married in 1970. Yunus's marriage with Vera ended in 1977 within months of the birth of their baby girl, Monica Yunus, as Vera returned to New Jersey claiming that Bangladesh was not a good place to raise a baby. Yunus later married Afrozi Yunus, who was then a researcher in physics at Manchester University." Gautam Discuss 04:26, 17 July 2007 (UTC)

I think it unlikely that he married " Afrozi Yunus" I woudl guess her last name was something different - I notice this erro made quite often on wikipedia - are people retarded? Have they not noticed that women commonly take their husband's last name as their name when they marry? Can someone correct it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 141.244.172.81 (talk) 07:32, 24 October 2014 (UTC)

Net profit 5 Taka?

Muhammad Yunus and Dr. Akhtar Hameed Khan

Someone added a sentence about Dr. Akhtar Hameed Khan in the introduction section of this article. The reference link that has been provided does not support the exact statement made in the article - "Yunus was inspired by the leadership skills of Dr. Akhtar Hameed Khan". The only factual point from the reference is Yunus once paid tribute to Dr. Hamid. Anyways, this in no way belongs to the introduction. I will reword and relocate the sentence to the article body. Anyone who disagrees, please discuss here first. Arman Aziz 02:32, 20 August 2007 (UTC)

Good Article review

Using the ever-changing meme catch phrases of the internet, this article is full of win! In other words, I find this article to be richly deserving to GA status, due to its high quality. There can, of course, be some improvements, but nothing that I think represents real failures of the Good Article criteria. The article is neutral almost everywhere, I see no sign of real instability, it seems to fulfill the specific MoS guidelines of the GA criteria nicely, there don't seem to be any obvious gaps in the article's coverage, the referencing is top quality, and the images all seem to be ok. I also have a few comments on more minor things that should help improve this article even further.

  • You mention "Conservative clergy" as people who opposed the bank, but even though that is exactly the phrase the reference uses, i'm not so sure that's actually what the Islamic equivalent of clergy is called. Might want to look into that.
  • The paragraph about the Global Elders seems like it doesn't belong, because it looks less neutral than the rest of the article. "convened a group of world leaders to contribute their wisdom, independent leadership and integrity together to the world." is entirely subjective and this line is not referenced, I presume this was meant as a direct quote of some statement they made, that should be referenced and the sentence should be framed in a way that makes it clear that it was from a statement, rather than a statement of fact according to Wikipedia alone.
  • It looks like the paragraph has more to do with the Global Elders rather than Yunus. It should focus on that Yunus is a member, rather than talk about who is funding the Global Elders and who is the chair and all those details not directly relevant to Yunus.
  • In the family section, "His younger brother Muhammad Jahangir is a popular television presenter." doesn't seem to be referenced.

Homestarmy 03:25, 27 October 2007 (UTC)

Social business

I think the article should at least mention Yunus' idea of the social business. He's pushing this idea in his book "Creating a world without poverty: Social Business and the future of capitalism" (which itself should at least be mentioned) and in all the lectures he gives anywhere in the world. I have added a link to the social business article and would add the info I'm here requesting myself, but I'm not sure which section it should go into: political activity? —Preceding unsigned comment added by DeadCow (talkcontribs) 07:27, 17 April 2009 (UTC)

Shouldn't it be a self-standing section? No need to make it a sub-section of political activities. But, hey, would you also consider including some pros and cons balance in the "social business" section? It's probably not as rosy as Mr. Yunus presents. And, oh, the new section can come right between the sections "Grameen Bank" and "recognition". I guess, that would keep things in perspective. Aditya(talkcontribs) 14:16, 17 April 2009 (UTC)

Where was Dr. Yunus born?

He was born in 1940 when Bangladesh did not exist yet. The official name for the state that Bengal was a province of in 1940 is "Indian Empire" or simply "India." --Ttownfeen (talk) 16:53, 1 October 2010 (UTC)

There was at one time a separate article titled Yunus Under Attack, which was deleted as a content fork. At the request of one of the editors involved, I restored the article and merged its contents intact into the larger article, under the heading Muhammad Yunus#Yunus under attack, in order to preserve the editing history of all the content. Other than that, all I've done was minor copyedits (removing all the honorific "Prof." and "Professor", per our manual of style) and cleanup. I am not addressing the more substantive BLP and NPOV issues clearly involved here. --Orange Mike | Talk 17:46, 10 March 2011 (UTC)

As a matter of clarification.... though I asked for the undeletion, I have not been involved in the previous article. I was merely asked for help in editing it earlier today (before the deletion actually). I will try to help the editors on the way to neutrality (if possible :)). Anthere (talk) 18:47, 10 March 2011 (UTC)

Neutrality

In February, the international community visibly stepped up its defense of Yunus through a number of efforts, including the founding of a formal network of supporters known as “Friends of Grameen” .[1]

is not ok because contains far too many references which are not detailed enough. There is no such thing as an "international community". I rephrased very lightly in

In February, several international leaders, such as Mary Robinson, stepped up its defense of Yunus through a number of efforts, including the founding of a formal network of supporters known as “Friends of Grameen” .[2]

which is still not really ok. Ideally, several names would be provided here.
besides "a number of efforts" is not satisfactory. If there are more efforts than the "friends of Gramen", they should be mentionned. Otherwise, the "number of efforts" should be dropped.

Well, there is lot's of work to get to WP standards... help welcome :) Anthere (talk)

Muhammad Yunus (economist)Muhammad Yunus – This article should be moved back to its original name, as it is the clear WP:primary topic, with over 29,000 hits in April. Of the entries in the new disambiguation page currently at Mohammad Yunus, the highest traffic count is Younis Khan with 6106, and his name is not ambiguous with this article title anyway. The others are all much less. In addition, the overwhelming number of incoming links are to the economist (although some diligent editors are already "correcting" this).
