It states as fact without citation that the original lyrics of the song refer to the "King of France". In all examples I have seen they refer to the "King of Spain". It is quite possible that the protagonist Ted fought with the Spanish against the British in the years leading up to the Nine Years War and the Flight of the Earls in 1607.
