I am not able to tell which two people mentioned in the first paragraph are considered the founders of Mount Vernon. The sentence beginning with "They" should be more specific. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 210.84.15.170 (talk) 23:48, 21 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Please keep Wikipedia free of Internet hoax. I'm referring to a baseless rumor concerning Glenn Beck, as refuted by UrbanLegends.[1] —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.246.28.169 (talk) 22:10, 4 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Beck controversy?

[edit]

When I visited this page a couple of weeks ago, there was a paragraph about the mayor's decision to give Glenn Beck the key to the city, and the fact that some people were upset by this. Was it decided that this point wasn't controversial enough to address? Why did it disappear? StanHater (talk) 01:20, 27 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

As much as I dislike Glenn Beck (a controversial far right wing commentator for Fox NEWS and on many talk radio stations)(currently as popular as Rush Limbaugh), he IS a notable native of Mount Vernon and famously created a noteworthy incident when former mayor Bud Norris (multiterm, why not noted under Mayor as preceding Jill?) declared "Glenn Beck Day".
Transportation? SR20 goes through Burlington NOT come within Mount Vernon city limits. SR9 goes through the city of Clear Lake, does NOT come within Mount Vernon city limits.
Note the Railroad map of 1896 at [1]
Centennial Trail, abandoned Railroad line, "The Centennial Trail runs on the right-of-way of the Sumas Branch of the former Seattle, Lake Shore and Eastern Railway, built in 1889. The railway connected Seattle with Canada" Snohomish County Centennial Trail. Seems in conflict with your early railroad info.
The US Corps of Engineers has de-listed the Skagit River as a navigable waterway so it is no longer being dredged. (affects flooding). Allows the West Division St Bridge (Hwy 536) to be unmanned, no opening on demand for boats.
Obvious to some, but it should be noted that Mount Vernor is actually North of Victoria,BC (Canada). Either that or remove the equivalent reference you listed about 'being like Northern France'.
The I-5 bridge that just collapsed was built in 1955, according to WA DOT spokesman discussing the I-5 bridge collapse. Most of the I-5 bridges from Tacoma through Bellingham have dates 1963 through 1965 inscribed on them. East of the I5 bridge, the old hwy99 bridge (Riverside Dr MV to Burlington Blvd) apparently built in the 60's was replaced in 2004-2005. Quarter mi E of that, supports for an older bridge are apparent (can we use Google maps in place of first hand experience? Half mile E of that is RR bridge.

Lushootseed name

[edit]

The article says that the "early days" started in 1870, but was it occupied before white people arrived? The Lushootseed name is susut̓iʔəʔ. Can someone with more knowledge about Mount Vernon add to this? --BB12 (talk) 00:19, 1 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
