"Bunny Drowning" Controversy

The following text was removed. Text removed: "The Washington Post reported on plans by its president Simon Newman to use a questionnaire administered to students to dismiss 20 to 25 freshman in the first weeks of school so as to improve the statistics. He was quoted as saying, "You just have to drown the bunnies … put a Glock to their heads."" But this story is growing and may well be significant. Two faculty have since been fired for "disloyalty" http://chronicle.com/article/Turmoil-Continues-at-a/235239 . This could be a landmark example representing a situation where a CEO president, one with no academic background, is running a University like a corporation. This could be the future of academic institutions as the pressure to save money and surpass arbitrary 'metrics' increases. Yes, now that the story has continued to develop and now includes not only the dismissal of multiple faculty members but also the resignation of the provost (who has returned to the faculty ranks) it probably warrants a sentence or two in this article. With the dismissal of tenured faculty members for "disloyalty" and the resignation of the chief academic officer this story will surely continue to grow in importance and scope (I fully expect others, perhaps including the president or members of the governing board, to be dismissed or resign but that is pure speculation on my part).
