Sound effects. The opl4 has 3 digital stereo outputs (uses SPDIF format iirc) FM, WAVE and MIX(wave+fm). You could use a different effect processor for wave and fm. It's very common for synths to have a limitation on how many effects can be used at the same time. So this is not unique for the opl4. What it actually lacks is the amount to be sent to an effect processor for a specific channel. So for example reverb level will be the same for all channels that are send to an effect processor.
