Notability

[edit]

I am a bit puxzzled by the comment on notability. The subject has received coverage in mainstream Seychelles newspapers. Is that not fulfilling notability criteria " If a topic has received significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject "? Fattutor (talk)

  • I suggest that you read WP:ANYBIO, which prescribes that a person is deemed notable if they have done something that is "remarkable, significant, interesting or unusual enough to deserve attention or to be recorded".
Essentially Mohan Niranjit Burhan is only a puisne (or junior judge) on the Seychelles Supreme Court. If he was the Chief Justice, who I note does not even have an article, then he would be deemed notable or significant due to his position. There are in fact seven other puisne judges on the Seychelles Supreme Court, none of which are notable. The Supreme Court of Seychelles is not even the preeminent court in the country, which is the Seychelles Court of Appeal, of which Burhan is not a member. In addition he was only one of forty high court judges in Sri Lanka, which does not necessarily make him notable either. Now if Burhan was a President's Counsel, who would be considered notable under WP:LAWYERS but there is no evidence that he has received such a legal recognition. Thats very useful. You have a point but is that a personal opinion as an interpretation of regulations by you or is there some 'wiggle room' in the matter for different opinions?Fattutor (talk)

  • That's my interpretation of the WP guidelines/policies - ultimately it would be determined in an AfD debate. However as a participant in numerous AfD debates I think that you would find my interpretation would be pretty close to the mark. Now I'm not suggesting that the article be listed for an AfD at this moment in time rather that editors (such as yourself) work at improving the article, clearly establishing its notability, as per the WP guidelines/policies. Thank you. Thats really good advice. I was really going on the fact that he was mentioned in a national newspaper in some detail. I think your interpretation is that notability is a lot more than receiving a mention in the newspapers. Achievement over newsworthiness is a true meritocratic way of looking at things. Great to have access to experienced editors like yourself Much appreciated. Fattutor (talk)
