Agulio
[edit]What does agulio mean in the section on the Vatican De Vaticano et agulio. Let's edit it into the text. --Wetman (talk) 10:12, 30 June 2009 (UTC)
- Compare modern Spanish aguja. Agulio must just be bad Latin. Here you can see that Agulio is correct for the heading, but agulia (nominative) figures in the text. Srnec (talk) 18:29, 30 June 2009 (UTC)
- Brilliant, Srnec! That scratches the itch. --Wetman (talk) 20:49, 30 June 2009 (UTC)
This is probably not relevant enough to go in the article, but it is interesting. From 1615:
Don Quixote, II, viii:
Los sepulcros de los gentiles fueron por la mayor parte suntuosos templos: las cenizas del cuerpo de Julio César se pusieron sobre una pirámide de piedra de desmesurada grandeza, a quien hoy llaman en Roma La aguja de San Pedro.
The tombs of the heathens were generally sumptuous temples; the ashes of Julius Caesar's body were placed on the top of a stone pyramid of vast size, which they now call in Rome Saint Peter's needle.
My translation (John Rutherford) has "obelisk" for pirámide. Srnec (talk) 03:42, 19 July 2009 (UTC)
