Multiple issues

[edit]

The article can be improved by:

  1. Providing a balanced view of how resource classification efforts are viewed in company/project, national, international and financial reporting contexts. Presently article is biased towards company public reporting POV.
  2. Inclusion of UNFC-2009 and various national classifications (USGS, Geoscience Australia etc)
  3. Definitions of reserves and resources from multiple contexts should be provided, rather than the company public reporting oriented CRIRSCO template (JORC/CIM/SAMREC etc).
  4. Comparison / contrast with petroleum classification.
  5. Multiple referencing

Definitions

[edit]

USGS definitions[1]

Resource: A concentration of naturally occurring solid, liquid, or gaseous material in or on the Earth's crust in such form and amount that economic extraction of a commodity from the concentration is currently or potentially feasible.
Identified Resource: Resource whose location, grade, quality, and quantity [is] known or estimated from specific geologic evidence.
Reserve Base: That part of an identified resource that meets specified minimum physical and chemical criteria related to current mining and production practices, including those for grade, quality, thickness, and depth.
Reserves: That part of the reserve base which could be economically extracted or produced at the time of determination. The term...need not signify that extraction facilities are in place and operative. Reserves include only recoverable materials...
Economic Resources: This term implies that profitable extraction or production under defined investment assumptions has been established, analytically demonstrated, or assumed with reasonable certainty.

I'm new to contributing to wiki. I'm a professional Mineral Resource Estimation Geologist. I'd like to come back and start filling in the many voids here, with references. However, the structure needs to be corrected. Maybe someone can help a newbie reorganise the structure in a logical way so I can add content. There may be related pages to consider...

Fundamentally, "Mineral Resource Classification" should come under "Mineral Resource Estimation" (this needs to be the parent or heading for this page). Why? Resource Classification is a distinct (but relatively minor) part of the process encompassed within Resource Estimation. The process goes like this: Resource Estimation -> Resource Classification -> Mining Study and Conversion of Resources to Reserves (Reserve Categorisation)

Resource Estimation is usually the last thing you do in Mineral Exploration before it becomes something completely different (i.e. Mining)

Get signed up and come on in and join the fun, there are a few geologists and lots of other experienced users around here who are willing to help with the Wiki stuff. Vsmith (talk) 21:59, 8 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Title

The title of the article should be changed to: 'Mineral Resource and Mineral Reserve classification' to match the real content of the wiki article. EvalRohstoffe (talk) 11:56, 7 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
