Battlegroup Gotland

[edit]

They are now talking about a 'Battlegroup Gotland', that will include a tank company along with a mechanised infantry company. It looks like that the Swedish Government is still not serious about defence, both with regards as to Gotland and Sweden in general. And most of the political opposition seems content to let them away with it, at least for the moment. Though I suppose it is at least a half step in the right direction. Ceannlann gorm (talk) 09:32, 23 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Sneaky ping there! The military protection of Sweden has been really low on the agenda for some time now. The political debate is focusing on more pressing matters, most of all on how to provide for all the refugees coming to Sweden from other countries right now. That and the recruiting of young Swedish Muslims to the ISIS. Actually, listening to the news on the Swedish radio, you get more info on what is going on in Syria than at the borders of Sweden. w.carter-Talk 09:51, 23 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
And of course it doesn't occur to those paragons of political intellect that if Russia does decide to invade, they may end up being refugees themselves, not to mention the people that they are supposed to be serving and protecting. Ceannlann gorm (talk) 17:01, 23 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Well, logic does not seem to be a very large part of the equation. :-/ Then there is also the part where we simply don't have enough trained soldiers at the moment. This has been the case ever since the government got rid of the allmäna värnplikten (general drafting or something) and changing that will require a decision made by two elected governments with a four-year gap in between. w.carter-Talk 17:18, 23 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I see there seems to be finally some movement regarding Battlegroup Gotland, though it's still moving slower than a half-dead snail (only "expected to take shape by the end of next year"? And even then only around 300 troops including reserve & support personnel if I am not mistaken? What is the government smoking this week?!) However this sentence leapt out at me: "The former barracks have long since been turned into local government offices". I presume that they're talking about the Gotland Brigade's old digs in Visby there? Ceannlann gorm (talk) 10:29, 5 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Ceannlann gorm: Half-dead snails are fast compared to this. The plan they have been rehashing since September 2015 is for 300 troops in about three years. And as you can see from the latter link they are still scratching their head about where to lodge them. The old digs are indeed the P 18 in Visby. It is now all occupied by the County Administration and a horde of private companies. When the military left, they moved everything from within The Wall and out to the old barracks. Effectively killing the town (one of the reasons I left) and making a military comeback virtually impossible. The change is actually visible on Google maps with all the firms now based on the old P 18 grounds. I've heard wild stories on the radio on and off during this winter about how they are going to lodge the troops now... Not impressed. w.carter-Talk 11:26, 5 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Let me guess; most or all of those private companies are major political contributors to the SAP. Ceannlann gorm (talk) 12:47, 5 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
No, that is taking the conspiracy theory too far. ;) They are in fact mostly on the opposite end of the political scale. Small companies who can't afford the now exorbitant rents inside The Wall where only very rich people from the mainland and Germany can afford to live and have businesses. w.carter-Talk 12:52, 5 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Just as a matter of curiosity, what does Governor Seidegård have to say about this ongoing multiple trainwreck? Ceannlann gorm (talk) 14:08, 5 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Nothing as far as I can see. She's busy cutting ribbons. w.carter-Talk 14:19, 5 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Battlegroup Gotland

[edit]

I started a new section about the new group. Hope you don't mind. I also moved the latest external links up and used them as refs in the text, it's better to have them there and write text around the subject. I only started that paragraph for you to expand since that is more your area of expertise. w.carter-Talk 12:47, 5 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Oh joy

[edit]

I see that things have continued to go into the outhouse while I was gone, to put it politely.
