What about documentaries on the Battle of Midway?

What about USS Yorktown sinking and other missing/unaccurate historical facts?

The Yorktown was sunk in the battle of Midway, however as I remember, it survived with minor damage in the movie. Even the young protagonist survived in the ship's sickbay. Is this worth mentioning, perhaps as a trivia? Could somebody verify it? --V. Szabolcs 22:15, 12 January 2007 (UTC)

You're correct. I've seen the movie [I own it], and the USS Yorktown was definitely sunk by I-168 on June 5-6, 1942 [torpedoed on one day, sank the next]. I was a bit ticked off at that in the movie myself. I've added it to trivia section.

There is nothing wrong with the film's portrayal of the Yorktown's demise as I recall it. The film ends before the I-168 sank her. It is a storyline that is left unfinished, nothing more. Or did I miss something?? LOL - Skull-1

Another humorous glitch occurs during Charlton Heston's last flight. He flies over several Japanese carriers, despite the fact that three of them (Akagi, Soryu, Kaga) were already on their way to the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. The story of Yourktowns sinking is interesting, because this ship could survive if the recovery actions would be made intensively - the ship was many hours on the sea unattended and empty, then it was some time towed by the cruiser... :-)

One interesting historical episode which is also missing is the sinking of the cruiser Mikuma which happened during the battle too - during this attack died also the USMC pilot Richard E. Fleming, awarded later by Medal of Honor, also not mentioned in the movie etc.

There are also missing references to other aviators - to people which are important and should be mentioned should be counted also the marine corps pilot Lofton R. Henderson in one from the first unsuccessfull attack of bombers (as far as I remember he started from Midway). He was the leader of the USMC bombing squadron similary to John C. Waldron and Massay. Actually, it seems to me at the war time his act was intended to be the most important between the sacrifices of the pilots attacking the Japanese fleet, because after short time in his honor was named the newly created (conquered) airfield on Guadalcanal - Henderson Field - which was the central point of the next phase of war in Pacific Ocean.

Interesting the creators did not use such stories, especially if the movie contains multiple repeated small parts...

Redirect

It seems that "the battle of midway" redirects here, rather than to Battle of Midway, which I find absolutely extraordinary. Can anyone explain a decent reason for this before I change it? Badgerpatrol (talk) 19:49, 27 March 2008 (UTC)

Inaccurate filming

Although I'm unable to find any sources regarding a list of minor actors, when I saw the film, most of the Japanese soldiers appeared to be Filipinos. Can anyone confirm this? -- 李博杰  | —Talk contribs email guestbook complaints 12:24, 8 May 2009 (UTC)

Just to clarify, the scene where the USS Yorktown's (It may be called by another name in the movie, it's been a while) is dive bombed, is actual real footage of the USS Ticonderoga being hit. I know this because my Father was in that bridge when it was struck. He was shocked when he saw the movie for the first time, as he recognized the ID numbers painted on the ship's deck. He was nearly killed in that battle. His skull was split open, his facial bones were crushed and he lost most of his teeth. Currently it says: "The other Sensurround films were Earthquake (1974), Rollercoaster (1977), and Battlestar Galactica (1978)."
