why was'nt michael stivic parents ever mentioned in the show or seen for that matter.

They were mentioned; it's often mentioned that they died.

Right. In the episode that shows Michael and Gloria's wedding (as a flashback) we learn that Michael's parents died in a car crash when he was very young and that Michael was raised by his Uncle. SnappingTurtle 16:18, 23 June 2006 (UTC)

Religion

It looks as though he now qualifies as both atheist and agnostic. Which is it? 77.161.70.128 (talk) 17:38, 28 February 2008 (UTC)

I think he identifies as both, in different episodes. This is not unrealistic: there are many people in real life who call themselves both agnostic and atheist. marbeh raglaim (talk) 05:17, 1 June 2009 (UTC)

Polish?

How could he be Polish with a last name like Stivic? That is not a polish last name. Norum (talk) 23:11, 5 August 2009 (UTC)

You better talk to Norman Lear directly about this. --Jazzeur (talk) 01:59, 6 August 2009 (UTC)

Aren't we funny? They should have done a better research back then. But then, they are Americans, so that explains a lot. Norum (talk) 10:10, 7 August 2009 (UTC)

Thank you. --Jazzeur (talk) 00:30, 8 August 2009 (UTC)

I'm an American and I, too, have wondered why they gave him such a non-Polish last name. I guess in the minds of Cold War-era America, all of Eastern Europe was the same. As is noted in the article, he's also supposed to be from Chicago, but has a thick New York accent. The funniest thing to me is that the article says he and Gloria moved to Santa Barbara when he got a job at UCLA. That's a hell of a commute!71.115.89.70 (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 19:05, 16 May 2010 (UTC).

Stivic is a Croatian name. It was probably chosen to sound vaguely Slavic while still being easy to pronounce and spell. It's never explained in the show, although in one episode, a police sgt. recognizes the name as Polish, so it was clearly meant to be Polish. If they really wanted to do a backstory, it could have been explained that he was mostly Polish and identified as such, but the name is Croatian. That's probably too complicated, though. freshacconci talktalk 17:33, 26 September 2010 (UTC)
