  • ... that at the age of 80, Michael Kettle received an award for his work as a cricket groundskeeper?
  • Source: "Mickleover Cricket Club's Mike Kettle, 80 and Alan Hancock, 81, will receive the Cricket World Magazine's Groundcare Lifetime Achievement award on 9 September, at Lord's Cricket Ground" from: "Mickleover groundsmen receive trip to Lord's for lifetime award". • The qpq is completed and the article meets the requirements: article was five times expanded beginning September 10, 2024 and it is 2980 characters. The person appears to pass WP:NCRIC. The hook is mildly interesting and it is backed up with a reliable source. I did not find evidence of plagiarism or clop. The article is written from a neutral position and this looks good. Glad to see you back Dumelow. Bruxton (talk) 23:39, 11 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Bowling Sir Garfield

[edit]

Hi Dumelow. I noticed you were iffy about Kettle dismissing Sobers twice in one day. It's curiouser - it was not the same day as the FIFA final?

This has that it was a 3-day match over 23-25 July 1966. Kettle bowled Sobers for 45 in the first innings and for 4 in the second but... the FIFA final was 30 July? (And this has the Windies playing Glamorgan on the 30th.)

No doubt it was a heady few days but is Mr Kettle misremembering? (Or has the BBC mistranscribed the Radio Derby interview... or is the CricInfo archive wrong - which I doubt because this and this agree with it)?

We can't contradict what the BBC ref says but would it be better to change the sentence from:

"His favourite cricket memory came in this match when, on the same day as the 1966 FIFA World Cup final, he bowled out Garfield Sobers." to:

'His favourite cricket memory comes from this time when, just before England won the 1966 FIFA World Cup final, he bowled out Garfield Sobers.' (or similar)? JennyOz (talk) 12:38, 24 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the heads up and your usual dedicated work checking out articles before DYK appearances. Looks like something is wrong, I suspect Kettle was misremembering or was misquoted; though strange that he calls it a one day match. I will ping User:AssociateAffiliate for input (hope they don't mind!) as they're my usual go-to on cricket matters in case something strange is going on with dates or there's another game not recorded. Suspect probably best to go with something like you say - Dumelow (talk) 17:54, 24 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I have had a look at CricketArchive (which I find is better than ESPNcricinfo, which is full of inaccuracies) and the match did indeed take place on 23-25 July 1966 at Northampton. Kettle dismissed Sobers for 45 in the West Indians first innings, and repeated the feat in their second innings, dismissing Sobers, who was batting at 8 (in the first innings he batted at 6) for 4 runs. The FIFA WC Final was on the 30th, so I would agree with JennyOz's suggestion... I would suggest the BBC has mistranscribed it. Nice to see you back, btw Dumelow :) AA (talk) 19:49, 24 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks AA, good to be back in the swing of things. I've amended the article to reflect the findings here, cheers - Dumelow (talk) 20:35, 24 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks both. JennyOz (talk) 00:36, 25 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
