M. D. Smith is a well known researcher. He is one of the first people to work "the social welfare impact of increased product variety in Internet markets". His work was cited in the bestselling book "The Long Tail" (see The Long Tail). He has won numerous awards for his work on e-commerce, marketing, and pricing on the internet.
