Messini vs. Messene
[edit]The German Wikipedia has two separate articles in order to distinguish the modern town of Messini from the ancient city of Messene. The modern town took its name from the ancient city but they are 15-20km apart and to blend them together in the same article is confusing (particularly as Google Maps appears to have this confused too). - Absolutely. I propose to split them forthwith. I see no one has shown much of an interest since 2010. We might have to split into two stubs. The two communities are not and never were the same. Messini was at the location of ancient Nisi. I can see why they would change the name as Messini is one of the two major cities in Messenia. Not only that but the big military base there lends some weight to them. Messini should be named for Messenia. So basically was Messene, except for the nymph that got inserted[clarify]. But we have two different spaces here. I'm doing some work in this area. As soon as I get a chance I will divide the two articles, placing Messini in what is now the redirect to Messene. If any man sees any reason why these two articles should not be distinct speak up or forever hold your peace. I will wait a few days for you, but we already have two votes as well as the whole German WP. There is no problem with Google maps. They use Ithone, the name of the ancient city after Epaminondas.Dave (talk) 15:34, 5 October 2011 (UTC)

[edit]Law 3852 is all very well, but this kind of detail does not normally appear. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.173.247.22 (talk) 12:15, 22 October 2011 (UTC)
Who ruined Ancient Messene?
[edit]I can understand who built the city. But who ruined it? How did it become ruins?
non sequitur
[edit]"the helots of Messenia revolted yet again against their Spartan overlords" Without a discussion of the enslavement, this is totally wasted. 71.163.117.143 (talk) 21:23, 26 September 2014 (UTC)
