[edit]I read that the Merstham Tunnel Mystery WAS the first murder on a railway in the world... Do you have a source for why it isn't?
- The thing is, it's a startling claim. After all we're talking about 80 years of a violent century, here. It would be astonishing if this was restricted to the UK, let alone the whole world. I think it really needs an authoritative citation before making the claim here. I have found a citation (which I don't claim to be authoritative) for an earlier one, by the way: [1] Mucky Duck 10:59, 16 September 2005 (UTC)
- An update on this - Here is a good source (British Transport Police) for what they say was the first railway murder, near Hackney Wick in 1864: [2] Mucky Duck 12:38, 16 September 2005 (UTC)
Is "Water-Colour" (Watercolour or Water Colour?) in Merstham or as I believe not? SundayAgain (talk) 09:22, 12 February 2012 (UTC)
Etymology/origin of the name Merstham
[edit]--Arkykra (talk) 08:49, 18 September 2014 (UTC) The origin of the name Merstham given in the article differs quite a bit from the version given on a local history website (http://www.merstham.co.uk/merstham/MersthamHistory.htm). I don't know enough to say which is correct, but the local history site could be better researched. If someone knows more it would be worth looking into. 'Mearsoetham', the name meaning literally 'dwelling of the people of the marsh'. versus this article which says Mearsætham, which seems to be Anglo-Saxon Mearþ-sǣt-hām = "Homestead near a trap set for martens or weasels"
Wine auction
[edit]Not worthy of comment in the main article, but perhaps of interest to a passing researcher, might be a wine auction,by Messrs Christie, Manson & Woods, on 13 June 1910, “The Property of W. A. Willmott, Esq., of Greville Place, Merstham”. (My picture #s 21217/29.) JDAWiseman (talk) 12:34, 9 June 2015 (UTC)
