Memphis

[edit]

He clearly does not identify himself by Depay, and yet the wikipedia entry continuously refers to him as "Depay."

Those entries should all be changes to Memphis, as other footballers with single-name nicknames are not referred to by their surname, but rather their first names: see Robinho http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Robinho — Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.77.246.37 (talk) 13:38, 30 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I would like to object. Dutch commentators still call him Depay. It's not like he legally changed his name, it only says "Memphis" on his shirt for personal reasons but I've only ever heard him referred to as Depay. KarstenO (talk) 00:37, 27 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
There is a very distinct difference between the Brazilian naming conventions, and a player who simply wants to be known as something. For instance, Javier Hernandez is known as Chicharito, but he's referred to officially, and in the press as Javier Hernandez. Memphis Depay is referred to as Memphis Depay or Depay, very rarely, if ever, as Memphis. 208.40.242.41 (talk) 08:22, 23 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Or you could consider it to be the same as the Bruce/Caitlyn Jenner self identification issue. He identifies himself as Memphis, just as Bruce/Caitlyn identifies as Caitlyn. Or does that courtesy only apply if you're LGBT ? Spacecowboy420 (talk) 08:48, 19 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Don't be ridiculous. A large number of media organisations refer to him as "Depay", so there's no reason why we shouldn't. I very much doubt that many media organisations still refer to Bruce Jenner, so your example is a little spurious. – PeeJay 17:58, 21 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

MOS:IDENTITY Spacecowboy420 (talk) 10:42, 20 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Calm down PJ. It was just a suggestion, I'm sorry you thought I was being ridiculous. Actually, I would imagine that he is most commonly referred to as "Memphis Depay" rather than "Memphis" or "Depay" Spacecowboy420 (talk) 06:29, 23 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Until Memphis Depay legally changes his name he will be known by Depay (in addition to Memphis.. obviously). The fact that he doesn't like his last name means nothing. Bill Clinton is similar, but actually changed his name and today no one would refer to him as Bill Blythe. However, if he had simply said "I wish to be called Bill" and not have changed his name, it would be ridiculous to think that the article for an American President would begin sentences as "Bill was..." September 2015

[edit]

Memphis Depay scored twice against Club Brugge in Aug 2015 (current article shows no goals for Memphis). MikeyGooner (talk) 19:37, 3 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Are you talking about in the infobox? If so, the figures are correct since the infobox only shows league statistics. – PeeJay 22:29, 3 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Issue with first sentence

[edit]

I've read the subsection in this talk page about Memphis' name, but this is ridiculous:

Memphis Depay (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈmɛmfɪs dəˈpɑi]; born 13 February 1994), also known as Memphis

You can begin any wikipedia biography with this since everyone is known by their first name (that's literally the reason for it's existence, so people can call you by it):

Abraham Lincoln, also known as Abraham... David Beckham, also known as David...

I'll delete this part, just putting my reason here.

Xzpx (talk) 03:46, 24 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

First, please add all new comments to the bottom of the page. Second, your examples are spurious since Memphis is actually known simply as "Memphis" by a great many people. It's simply not the same as David Beckham or Abraham Lincoln. In fact, it's quite the opposite, since those two men would probably more likely be known by their last names. – PeeJay 07:49, 24 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
First, please don't be condescending. Second, is there any precedent for this? Can you find another wikipedia article where it says X Y, also known as X? If not, then you should revert your reversion. Xzpx (talk) 04:31, 25 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Also, please rebuff this sentence if you believe you are correct: "The reason for the existence of a first name is so you will be known to other people by that name." If this sentence is true, then saying Memphis Depay, also known as Memphis is stupid. Xzpx (talk) 04:33, 25 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Finally, the reason why I even corrected the erroneous article is because it caused confusion with me. First time I've read "Memphis...also known as Memphis" I thought maybe the original spelling of his name was different than his 'nickname'. Maybe my screen resolution was playing tricks on me and m is actually "rn" in his actual name.. nope, just wikipedia being wikipedia. Xzpx (talk) 04:36, 25 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
And one more thing; the definition of also is "in addition; too" (according to google.com). So, to write the first sentence in an equivalent manner: "Memphis Depay known additionally as Memphis". Do you not realize now how awkward this sounds? It is simply an incorrect use of English. Xzpx (talk) 04:53, 25 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Xzpx. This is what is called a mononym. He has personal reasons to not want to be referred to with his last name, so it is not at all comparable to Abraham Lincoln or David Beckham. It may have been worded awkwardly, but there is precedent for it. The article for the magician only known as Teller starts in a similar way. Similarly, remember all those famous female singers? Adele, Beyonce, Rihanna. All mononyms. KarstenO (talk) 18:10, 13 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Moordrecht

[edit]

Memphis place of birth, Moordrecht is not in the south of the Netherlands. It is in the province 'Zuid Holland' that could be translated as 'South Holland', but that is not the south of the Netherlands. I'd suggest to remove 'southern' from the first sentence in the Personal Life section.

Orphaned references in Memphis Depay

[edit]

I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of Memphis Depay's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.
