Party Colours

Why is there no consistency as to whether party colours should remain as relates to politicians changing parties? My edit to change Helen Dalton's colours from SFF to Ind was reverted, but Leslie Williams (who switched parties from Nat to Lib) had his party colours changed accordingly from green to blue. Same with Justin Field (NSW Leg. Council) who was elected as a Green but now sits as an Independent.--Mrodowicz (talk) 07:08, 30 March 2022 (UTC)

I really think we need to change how we deal with these - neither is really satisfactory. Perhaps something like this? I don't love the big blobs for non-defectors, but it's better than the inaccuracy the current approach produces. Someone might know how to make the double ones narrower?

Thanks for bringing it to the talk page - I reverted because we have had a consistent approach, however I'd missed someone had changed Leslie Williams (who is not a he by the way). The situation is different for Justin Field who was appointed not elected, but was a green to the end of the 2019 term and then an independent from the start of the 2019 term hence the note. That said just because it's the way things have been done doesn't mean it can't change - it's a matter of finding consensus.

I agree with Frikeg's dislike of the big blobs & I don't think there is anyway to further reduce the column width. You could make them single column blobs for the non defectors, but it doesn't improve the look. Things get a bit more complex with people like Glenn Brookes in 2015–2019 but at least he went back to the original party so the colour is not confusing. The only others I can think of who have changed more than once are some of the Labor splits.

The separate columns look a bit weird when you add a second person because the columns must be the same width, making a large white space between National and Liberal, but you could put the second colour on the right eg

Another way to do it is to use multiple rows, but it makes sorting on the party a bit confusing

Those are both much better than my options! I think I prefer the colour on the right to the two rows - as you say there are sorting issues when splitting rows, and I do think it's better to avoid giving people more "space" in the table just because they've changed parties. (This also gives due prominence to the party they're elected with, which I think is fair.) The only issue I can foresee is when someone goes through more than two parties in a term. That's rare enough that I don't think it counts that much against it - possibly we could do multiple colours on the right without messing things up too much. Frickeg (talk) 11:36, 3 April 2022 (UTC)

...there have been cases in the past of MPs defecting from one party, being an independent for a while, then joining or creating a new (3rd) party. Not sure how the current revision could accomodate such a situation. For me though this whole debate feels kind of ¯\_(ツ)_/¯, so whatever we end up settling on is fine by me.
