Melisende's brother

[edit]
Seeing as Jean of Arsuf married, and then died around 1177, when Melisande was a child, it's probable that he was her older half-brother. Melisande was born after 1170 as her youngest son Guy was born around 1215, making it impossible for Melisande to have been born earlier than that date. She inherited the title from her brother in 1177 and had two younger sisters, so one can conclude that she was born between 1171 and 1175. Her father had to have died before 1177, seeing as his son Jean attained the title of Lord of Arsuf.--jeanne (talk) 10:50, 12 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Actually Melisande's father Guy was never Lord of Arsuf. Her brother Jean was the first to hold the title. She inherited it from him.--jeanne (talk) 08:15, 13 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

"of Arsur"

[edit]

Melisende was "of Arsur", the name of the fief.--Wetman (talk) 11:00, 7 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Arsuf and Arsur are both the name of the fief. The crusaders themselves tended to spell it with an R at the end for whatever reason, but not always, and modern historians use both forms according to taste. (A search of Google Books for "John of Arsur" and "John of Arsuf", minus results from Wikipedia, shows both forms are common). Adam Bishop (talk) 11:13, 7 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
