Number and father

[edit]

It's not clear to me if Meliae/Melia is one of many creatures.

Also, it's not clear who was the father of the Meliae/Melia. The article on Uranus at Encyclopedia Mythica says the father was Uranus. The article about Melia at Encyclopedia Mythica says the father was Oceanus. Somethings doesn't sound correct.

In Greek mythology, the Meliae or Meliai were nymphs of the ash tree The word in Greek Meliai is plural, as the grammer demonstrates. The Meliae belong to a class of sisterhoods whose nature is to appear collectively and who are invoked in the plural, though genealogical myths, especially in Hesiod, give them individual names, such as Melia, "but these are quite clearly secondary and carry no great weight" notes Walter Burkert. The footnote gives the Greek sources. Too bad about Encyclopedia Mythica, often a good text. --Wetman (talk) 06:40, 12 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I understand: the Meliae were many but they were invoked as a single group.

Who was the father of the Meliae then? Hesiod wrote Uranus. Who wrote Oceanus?
