Rock of Ages

[edit]

I have long observed that the song may have been a contrafact of the hymn, "Rock of Ages". It was far more popular than it is even now, more were familiar with it, and on a humorous level, the song is textually similar. What brought my attention to this possibility is the Big Band rendition of the hymn by the Brentwood Jazz Orchestra on its iconic 1993 release "Rock of Ages". I suggest a listen to the BJO arrangement here: Brentwood Jazz Orchestra "Rock of Ages"(1993) LDeVose2(talk)

Inspired by Beethoven?

[edit]

I see the 'Mandolin for Dummies' book was cited, but do we have any sources to confirm specifically that the melody here was "derived" or "inspired" by the Beethovenian theme? I don't deny the obvious musical similarity -- that was what led me to this and the Flintstones pages in the first place. But are we certain the theme here can be directly tied to Beethoven's work, rather than the resemblance being somehow inadvertent? Are there any quotes from the original composer indicating the 'Tempest' Sonata movement 2 as a source of inspiration? PublicolaMinor (talk) 03:52, 8 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Article mentions rhythm changes in the Jazz Standard section. This whole thing is eerily similar to the scene in the 2nd Mad Max movie when the child recounts the history before the Pocky Lips. George fucking Gershwin is doing somersaults in his grave and that's quite a feat seeing that he was cremated!!! Izmirlig (talk) 03:38, 4 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Merger Discussion

[edit]

I would like to merge The B-52's cover to this article because the songs are the same. Yoshiman6464 (talk) 01:38, 6 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Support. Plenty of covers have articles on Wikipedia, but there's simply no information in this cover song's article that couldn't be appropriately summarized in the original.MichaelIvan 08:18, 30 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
