Origins of the concept?

[edit]

In a quick search, I find references to this term as early as 1988. It likely goes even earlier. As such, this article in present form is a start, but perhaps not a very accurate, and certainly not a very complete one. DA Sonnenfeld (talk) 02:31, 22 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The German origin of mediatization can be traced to Ernest Manheim (1933), according to Averbeck-Lietz (2014). I can verify that the word Mediatisierung occurs once in Manheim (1933), but I cannot verify the existence of an English translation mentioned by Averbeck-Lietz. The topic is mentioned in English translations of Manheim's works, but not the word mediatization. Agnerf (talk) 14:23, 3 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The reference to Kent Asp (2010) is missing in the concept chapter. Agnerf 14:23, 3 September 2021 (UTC).[reply]

I found it. It was a German handbook citing a Danish article citing a Swedish book! (Handbuch Verbandskommunikation 2010 p. 336; Hjarvard: The mediatization of society, 2008; Asp 1986). I will certainly revise this section. Agnerf (talk) 06:09, 4 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Major rewrite, October 2021

[edit]

I have rewritten and expanded this article, which was listed as "Start-Class" quality. Most of the text is completely rewritten. Only the sections "Materialist", "Physical resources" and "Subcultures" contain mainly text from the old version of this article, though abbreviated.

The article reviews the interaction between mass media and other sectors of society. There is hardly any limit to the number of topics that could be discussed under this heading, but I have limited the article to topics that have been the subjects of major focus by mediatization theorists.

"Mediatization" research is a paradigm under development. This paradigm is likely to be extended and reshaped in the future. I have tried to include the latest literature in order to bring the article up to date. Agnerf (talk) 09:21, 10 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Article Update, December 2023

[edit]

Hello! The article needed a lead section and parts of the original introduction seemed to be a good fit for a lead, so I reorganized the introduction to format into a lead paragraph. I tried to fix passive voice, grammar, and spelling errors that I found throughout the article. There are still some passive voice sentences, but I got stuck trying to think of ways to rewrite them. I double checked the Introduction to make sure that all the topics written were touched on later in the article (history, schools of mediatization, influence of media technology, sociocultural change). I also changed the title of 'Origins' to 'History' and added a small blurb about deep mediatization at the bottom of that section. I removed the mention about WWII in the radio section because it didn't seem necessary/relevant to the topic. I rewrote the section about Toys/Play in mediatization to include more information on the topic, as well as added sections about the Mediatization of Ignorance and the Mediatization of Politics.

Future sections to include could be a deeper dive into the mediatization of politics (I think Leong, P. P. Y. (2021). Digital mediatization and the sharpening of Malaysian political contests. ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute. https://doi.org/10.1355/9789814951883 could be a good source for this). I also wanted to add a section about the mediatization of LGBTQ+ themes but the only source I was able to find on the topic was Comer, J. (2022). Discourses of Global Queer Mobility and the Mediatization of Equality. Taylor & Francis. Frandsen, Kirsten. (2020). Sport and Mediatization. Routledge and it was difficult for me to follow the points the author was trying to make. The mediatization of the OJ Simpson case also seemed interesting to me (Neubauer, T. (2023). Mediatization of the O.J. Simpson Case : From Reality Television to Filmic Adaptation. transcript Verlag.) but I didn't have time to dive deep into the source.
