Cleanup required: wikilinking, reorganize info to put definition up front. -- cmh 04:53, 8 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

This page says that a Media Server merely stores and allows access to multimedia content. But as far as I know a media server is also responsible to decode information and then stream the result of the decoding to the media client (so that the media client can be a dump client witch will present the content no matter what its encoding is as long as the server can decode it)

Yes that may be true, but its sort of a broad term that is used for a lot different devices. I'm not saying that this is right, but it seems to be the case.

FileZilla?

What is an FTP program doing as a link in this article? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.8.217.50 (talk) 14:24, 18 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Its a way to transfer media from one computer to another. Say if you have a bunch of pictures, music, and such, and you want to tranfer it from one computer to another, then this is a means to do that. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.108.222.41 (talk) 11:27, 18 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Professional references?

[edit]

A media server is a professional broadcast video device used in TV stations and live events for playing back video clips and other visual content... —Preceding unsigned comment added by 203.209.211.26 (talk) 02:41, 15 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, but people are starting to refer to home servers that store and give them access to their media in various ways as Media Servers. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.108.222.41 (talk) 11:28, 18 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Media servers don't necessarily store media. In the domain of networks, the media server term arose from an architectural discussion to separate various appliances into one part handling the media and another part handling the application related control logic. See e.g. http://www.tmcnet.com/ims/0207/ims-feature-article-the-media-server-in-ip-networks.htm. This is different from the here given definition of a home computer storing various digital media as a media server. Microwaven (talk) 11:58, 22 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Do you have any idea how long it took me to find all those. That was a huge wealth of hard to find information. Well I found most of them, and I didn't think some of them should have been on there, but I respected other people, and even if I didn't think it should be on there I left it. Who the hell would do that?

(FWIW, the preceeding comment was from a 2008-08-18T05:38:43 edit by Giantjoebot. The deletion in question was presumably https://wiki.riteme.site/w/index.php?title=Media_server&diff=221614847&oldid=221575939 ) for "unencyclopedia content" i.e. a list of links to external web pages. I agree they don't belong in the article, but they may be of historic or research interest. ★NealMcB★ (talk) 17:38, 31 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
